Has anybody got an L400 with a winch on the front
Can`t say I`ve seen one but a mate at work says he knows of
one that used to do rally recovery
Was wondering about availability, price and how easy/difficult it would be to fit one _________________ IF IT AINT BROKE don't FIX IT

There is a two page bit about L400 front winches from November 2006. It includes photo's of the one at Fleetwood here:- http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13017
It also includes links to other related info and suppliers. :D
I had also wondered about fitting one and I queried the pictured one.
An unofficial word with a recently retired ex Traffic Div Chief Super did advise me that if he had seen one fitted like that to a Deli driving on the road he would have pulled it over and had serious words about instant removal, or confiscation, due to the potential injuries to a pedestrian in an accident. Apparently nothing should project forwards of the fitted bumper, which with the L400 is the plastic cover on the bullbar. :?
As the fitting of a removable one would also require some form of heavy duty metalwork to come up from the chassis mounting points underneath I also decided against that as it would get in the way when offroading, as mentioned in the above article.
But I am still open to good ideas about having one.

The fitment of that winch is horrible ! I've had a winch on previous vehicles and I do find it one of the more interesting aspects of venturing off-road.
I'm pretty sure there is only a handful of folks on here who would use one enough to justify the hassle and expense.
I've not had a real good look underneath mine as I'm trying to refrain from modding as it is an expensive hobby :? but I would have thought the best option for a winch mount would be to get a fabricator to scratch build a h/d bumper with built in winch mounts ?? _________________ Geoff |

I agree, the fitment of that winch leaves a lot to be desired IMHO.
I think the main problem with the Deli is that it hasn't got much space to mount a winch within the boundaries of the bull bar. I would still think a portable mount like the ones that fit on a towball (easy enough to make up somewhere to front mount a tow ball) or one that is sat in a tray and attached to either the front or rear of the vehicle using chains, that would only require the wiring to be in place permanantly on the Deli _________________

I have looked into this for a while.... surprise there eh
now the Air locker is sorted its back to top of list
Have some info from a guy in oz, these pics are from him....
If a winch sticking proud of the bumper was illegal then ALL winch installs would be illegal.
I have had and know mates with big ugly winchs and none of us have ever had a problem at either MOT time or with plod.
A simple option that I'm toying with is a removable winch with fast plug in power lines and strops to secure... or maybe a hand operated winch ?
anyway... that one from fleetwood really compromised approach angle this one apparently sticks out about the same as the bull bar !
I would use a plasma rope rather than steel wire with rollers.
The biggest problem is the lack of a proper chassis to bolt it to and the frame that is behind the bumper.
I know what I want but not got any further with it. _________________ Regards

I would be tempted to come off the top of that frame behind the bumper, maybe with a plate that goes across the whole width of it to spread the load and then "trim" the plastic bumper panel around it. That would keep it nice and high and still keep a reasonable approach angle. Just my thoughts from looking at the piccies _________________

I am thinking of chopping the bumper to suit the winch
I guess a plate welded accross the width of the front would have enough strength ? _________________ Regards

I reckon so, there's a lot of strength in that bit _________________

Mark!
The second piccy from Oz tends to indicate the Deli has had the bullbars permanently removed to allow the winch to be fitted? _________________

yes.. he used the bull bar mount holes and some extra bolts to secure it, but rekons the end result has a very similar approach to the original set up with bull bars, he plans to fit a bull bar type idea to the winch..
mock up...
I'd be going more the tubular bar protection myself _________________ Regards

i would wonder how string the mounts are for two reasons, firstly any strength they have will have been designed to resist impact not pull and secondly the bull bar is so pathetic itself.... _________________ A Delica - ITS LIKE A SWEDISH BRICK...ONLY BIGGER! |

while a winch is tempting, for the moment I simply carry one of these:
Don't have to worry about mounting as it fits nicely under the back seat, and for the number of times I expect to use it, will probably do me just fine...
(that said, I haven't ruled out adding a winch later...) _________________

The winch in the Fleetwood pictures is of a member called Chip.
From talking to him at the meet his winch was used for pulling his boat up the slipway.
It looked a good winch but Not in an ideal position.
Have been wanting to fit a winch for ages but once I started actually going offroading, I can't help thinking it should go on the back.

very nice...
BUT...
look how low the winch actualy sits.... in a vehicle like ours without monster tyres you would loose a lot of approach angle
but has given me idea or 2 ! _________________ Regards
