okay i have tried all the stuff sugested,
1. drive like a granny
2. service the beast (all filters etc)
still waiting for egr blanking plate am not smoking at all though(think order has gone missing waiting nearly two weeks now )

what else can it be that causes me to get only 17mpg max on a run.
just put £20 in and have done 80km and is 2thirds gone with about town driving?

have checked that brakes are not binding

have had a quick look for fuel leaks Can't see any

what do i go for next? injectors? pump timing? pump? turbo?

love my van but hate the fuel bill can cope with low 20's but this is mad every time i look down another fiver gone lol

gearbox hunts a little when pushed hard is this normal or is this cause of problems

also if i park on a hill nose up over night car stalls just after start up, is this the sympyom of the dreaded pump seals, if so, will i be loosing pressure and thus not getting a good spray pattern from injectors

please help before her indoors finds out that i have spent the kids diner money for the next year taking them to school for a week lol

thanks Karl.

i had this problem with my old swb exceed dude, suggestions then were to give it a full tlc service, block off the egr valve and religiously use fuel additive.

my royal must have clean filters and the like, and within 18 hours of purchase, i was over at mystery machines having the egr plate expertly fitted ;) and we do religiously use fuel additive, we can usually get just over 100 miles on 1/4 tank on motorway driving, but this goes down to 75-80 for pottering about town, the flippin thing must belch and take a huge swallow of fuel when it starts up or summat ;)

hope the above suggestions work for ya dude Smile

I was working mine out in kilometers originaly and was devestated by the calculations so took my wifes car for a run to measure the distance and sure enough i found that the milometer was showing miles and not km so from 18mpg i was actually getting 25 mpg. (hope this makes sense!!)

Hi all,
just reading through as I am now starting to get fed up with sub-20 MPG(though very close, usually around 19 or just about 20) Evil or Very Mad . I contacted the dealer regarding the EGR and his reply was "we simply disconnect them to stop them smoking" :? .....could this affect my MPG, as I notice people are on about a blanking plate....should I be looking for one of them instead? Question It's a 96 SWB so no as heavy as the LWB who some of you seem to be getting 24+.... I drive lightly, had all filters done etc etc....just won't come up to the 24 that some others are doing..... Crying or Very sad

Veggie oil is now on my list.... Wink

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Tim69
When he said we just disconnect them did he elaborate on how? some people just pull the black tube of and put something in to block it,this works but it also allows the EGR to remain either open, closed ,or even half and half depending on the working condition of the valve,by using a blanking plate to block it from the manifold it then doesn't matter if the valve is open or closed as it completely seals it of from the inlet manifold,if you have a look here http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29 it will tell you and show you in photo form exactly what to do and how to do it.
Also have you checked to make sure your speedo is actually reading in miles and not kilometeres hence the strange low MPG figures ? as this has been the case with quite a few members, mistakingly thinking that there odometer was still reading Ks when infact its actually chipped and reading Miles ,also could double check by travelling the same distance in a vehicle that is in miles then do the same journey in the Delica and check against the 2 ,i would say block the EGR with a plate avaialbe here http://www.pocuk.com/eshop/shop.html
check it over a couple of weeks then see if there is any diffrence in mpg figures.
If things don't improve then it may be time for a pump overhaul and injector overhaul, but first try some decent injector cleaner through the system ,something like millers diesel plus or redex for diesels,i hope this helps you and it will get your mpg up :D all the best
