It's official - I'm an idiot. I have had a replacement Gates timing and balance belt kit with tensioners for over a year - and quite a busy year! Lots of days green laning and several long weekends away green laning, the old bus has followed more modern, more kitted out and prepared vehicles over some of the toughest lanes in the country, struggled with some of the conditions, but always made it home under its own steam, even despite issues (blowout on M6, lost alternator pivot bolt, weekend up to the borders, running on battery charge and solar only, dismal day in the Dales when I didn't dare stop the engine until I got home and jerry rigged the starter motor and pre-heat. And every time I got safely home and switched off, a pat on the  speedo binnacle, and "Well done, we'll change those belts before we go out again." Yesterday, I took the in-laws to the top of the highest tarmac road in England, - to the weather station at the top of Great Dun Fell - freezing cold up there, and as usual, it never missed a beat. Today, I set it up for a night out with my biker mates in Cockermouth, 40 miles away. two miles the far side of Penrith, just about to drop into O/D at 3,000 rpm, the timing belt, seven years old, and 3,000km overdue, let go. The AA, bless'em, got me and Delica safely home within two hours of the call. I have undone the top belt cover and removed part of the broken belts. I'll start properly dismantling tomorrow. What are the chances I only need a new head or valve gear, and not a whole new engine? I know the rockers are meant to be sacrificial, but at 3,000 rpm?

Sorry to hear that.
I was lucky in that when Mitsi went in for a clean up and overhaul it was noticed that the timing belt was fraying and so it was replaced as part of the work.
Glad that you had full recovery to get you home.
Hope it’s just the valves and rockers.

Well it could have been during fording, as I have done quite a lot fairly recently, -  up to 2 ft, and including one very dodgy moment when it dropped a front wheel into a hole in the river bed and stopped - for a few seconds I was rocking as the river Eden, in slight flood, pushed me around. As the weather has only got worse, and the flooding too, I haven't been as rash since.

PS, A lot of folks have had to be rescued from their stranded vehicles, some in remote places at night, after going out solo. As the River Esk incident shows, it is too easy to mis-assess conditions, and the power of a river in flood is unforgiving.
