Hi

A bit of a legal warning to all you 'Youngsters'  (I'm over 50 so it doesn't apply to me)

If you passed your driving test after 1st Jan 1997 then you are restricted on what you can drive. If you have B plus E on your licence then you can legally drive an outfit (Vehicle and trailer) exceeding 3.5 tonnes (up to 7.5 Tonnes).  This was automatically granted if you passed your test prior to 1/1/97 but the only way to get it if you are post 1/1/97 is to take an additional test ie. HGV test.

As a Deli weighs in at about 2.25 Tonnes (unladen) the maximum trailer you can tow is 1.25 Tonnes.  You must remember that any passengers, luggage, fuel etc in the vehicle increases the towing vehicle weight  and anything in the trailer also increases that weight.  The combined  weight of Deli and trailer MUST NOT EXCEED 3.5 Tonnes or you will be illegal and make yourself liable to prosecution and also have invalid insurance.  As most caravans get close to or exceed this weight limit (except the micro lightweight ones) you can risk prosecution.

Please check your licence for your driving classifications before towing.   BE SAFE NOT SORRY.

Cheers

David

This is on the direct.gov.uk website:

The driving licence you need to tow a caravan or trailer

Towing trailers or caravans with vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes

Car licences held before 1 January 1997

All drivers who passed a car test before 1 January 1997 retain their existing entitlement to tow trailers until their licence expires. This means they are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM. They also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kgs MAM.

Drivers who hold subcategory C1+E - limited to 8.25 tonnes MAM, may apply for provisional entitlement to the new subcategory C1+E, in order to take and pass the test which will increase their combined vehicle and trailer entitlement to 12 tonnes MAM. It is not necessary to gain subcategory C1 entitlement first but drivers have to meet higher medical standards, and pass both the category C theory test and the subcategory C1+E practical test.

Car driving licence first obtained since 1 January 1997

Drivers who passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 are required to pass an additional driving test in order to gain entitlement to category B+E and all larger vehicles. In addition to the new driving tests, drivers of vehicles which fall within subcategories C1, C1+E, D1 and D1+E also have to meet higher medical standards.

Did my B+E back in February this year. With lessons it cost me a little over £1000 including the test and the retest  Embarassed Driving the school minibus they teach you to drive extremely passively pulling in at every possible moment and driving smoothly. To pass the B+E you have to drive as I see quite agressively.
It is basically like the HGV test but without the medical. You have to do stuff like reverse it in an S shape into a garage, reverse so you can which without needing to move the trailer etc etc.

Definately wouldn't have been able to pass without the lessons and opportunity to practice the manouvres.

Thanks,

Sam.

I would suggest trying Yellow Pages or something similar (or search online) for a local instructor.

Cheers
