A propos of the L400 discussion on centre diffs, fluid drives and freewheel hubs, it set me thinking about my less sophisticated L300. (1) Does the front prop shaft turn at all times on the move? (2) Are the hubs locked only in 4L, so this is the only position with 4 wheel overrun braking? (3) In 4H, are the hubs unlocked, freewheeling on the overrun (like a bicycle), and therefore dumping wind up, as long as the rear tyre rolling radius is bigger than the front? I think there is a cartoon explanation in my Japanese owners manual, but I have mislaid this, and its translated version.  The rolling radius is always bigger on the back than the front on mine, even with 5psi more in the front, due to the weight distribution.
Beats me how it goes around corners!

Auto hubs are engaged all the time in 4WD and do not free wheel that's why you don't use it on paved/hard surfaces.

I hated my auto hubs with a passion. I was never convinced they were disengaging properly as the 'wheel lock' green light on the dash used to flicker on and off and eventually they went wrong leaving me four wheel drive-less at a particularly awkward time!

I invested in a pair of manual hubs from Milners. Cheap.. cheerful...and although you have to get out of the cab to engage them at least you can be sure they are off when you want them to be. Dead easy to fit too. I'd thoroughly recommend them to anyone.

Mine work fine, as do the green lights, and thinking about it, if they freewheeled on the overrun, I would suffer having only 2WD in reverse! So they freewheel only to prevent the front drive train from rotating (otherwise driven by the front wheels when in 2WD mode,) -  and so eliminating the frictional losses and wear from that part of the system. Is that what Fairey hubs were for on some early Landies?
