okay forgive me if I'm being dumb or rude!
But!!!!!!
what is wrong with people advertising here motors for sale?
most of us own Delicas and are not looking for new ones!!!!!!
and if you are and search it lists (MDOCUK) as a poss link! so why fight it?
i know this WILL get deleted, i really do not understand the reasons behind this bizare rule!
i would of thought a free bit of advertising is a real bonus! or is there a deeper reason?
would love to know the answer before the post vanishes!!!!

Gordon,
adult, reasoned discussion has no reason at all to be deleted.
It's a great question ... why do we have a '10 post rule'?
Well ... it is explained quite clearly here <-- click to link
That only relates to posting in the 'For Sale' section though ... there is another '10 post restriction' that relates to use of the PM service ... that's simple - it's to help prevent people signing up, never joining in with the community, but using the PM service for their own use ... an example might be somebody who 'sources' parts to order and only ever responds by PM to 'wanted ads' ... it's happened before ;)
So ... back to the 'For Sale' sections - why the 10 post rule?
Please allow me to ask you something first Gordon?
Have you contacted ebay to question their policy of charging to place an ad AND charging a final valuation fee?
Let me ask you something else Gordon?
My contract for the current server runs to the end of September, then I have to renew for another 12 months (actually, I can pay monthly, but it costs more) ... any idea how much it costs to run your own high-end dedicated server?
I'll tell you, (but keep it to yourself - I don't like to shout about it!) ...
£3000.00
The events insurance for the current year cost an additional £700.00
Then there's the club gear - marquees, flagpoles, etc ... sadly, they don't grow on trees!
The entire point of the MDOCUK, as far as I am concerned, is the community aspect of the club - which is the biggest reason that the MDOCUK remains free to join and free to use!
I'm amazed if you've missed that in the 2 years that you've been here (or are you playing Devil's advocate?)
Anyway ... so, the club needs funding - which is why we have some banner advertising and one of the reasons that I've recently introduced the 'Lifetime Membership' scheme.
The strength of the MDOCUK community is the community itself.
Which all leads me nicely on to the '10 post rule' for advertising ...
As I have mentioned many times before, the services here are provided for FREE. in particular, the 'For Sale' sections are provided, for free, as a 'bonus' service for GENUINE club members.
Over the years, I have seen more and more people sign up to the club(s) simply to use our free services to try to guarantee a sale (we have a massive 'market') without paying any advertising fees ... useful funding towards the running costs of the club.
At it's worst, there are two aspects ...
Firstly, there are people out there who see our community as a great marketing opportunity, through which, with a bit of entrepreneurial spirit, they can set up a business selling 'Delica related' gear - is it right that they use the FREE services that I pay for, without contributing ANYTHING towards the cost of those services?
Secondly, (and I have to say, this one is, personally, the most irritating for me), the people who have something to sell (usually a Delica), find the club (it's not difficult! ;) ) then (ignoring the rules) make one single post - 'Delica for Sale ...'
Apart from the fact that they're effectively 'selling sand to the Arabs', they generally have no intention of joining the community - so where does that leave me and the club?
The ONLY way around this problem is to introduce a 'Classified ads' system, but why should I? I'd like to keep the facilities FREE for GENUINE Club members :?
As an aside ... and this is worth mentioning ... Delica's aren't the only thing that's appeared in the "For Sale" sections that I've had to deal with ... Replica watches, CIjALIS, VIjAGRA, mobile 'phones ... the list goes on! Where do I draw the line?
The rules are really quite simple, and they're in place to keep the services FREE and make it fair for everybody!

I'm not sure I get you Gordon

Well .... you'll have 30 days after the last reply on this thread to read it ... that's the 'auto delete' cut-off ;)
HTH?

Simon,
I'd just like to say that your explaination above is priceless and should put pay to a lot of doubts that members may have. This is the sort of valuable information that I loosely alluded to with my earlier (ignorant/uninformed) suggestion of an MDOCUK Charter.
Putting a human face on things is the perfect antidote to generic 'across the board' forum rules.
Thank you. _________________ Andy

Simon
Why not try and charge the freeloaders?
When a new member posts their first post in the forsale section
OR before 10 posts)
send them an email to explain the rules BUT also suggest that they can pay a TENNER for a 30 day post if they have no intention of joining the forum
Seems to compare with Autotrader prices

Any fees made would be classed as 'income' to the club, Which would then bring in to play various tax and other Vat fees payable to the Government (inland Revenue), do you really want that? _________________

EEEeeeerrrrmmmmm
So the fees generated from the banners ads would be......?? INCOME 2 da Club?
So the commission generated from members using the club insurance deal would......?? INCOME 2 da Club?
The Club must be making money SOMEHOW to pay £3k a year for the server.....
As regards VAT I thought there was a threshold of over £20k turnover before that becomes an issue........
As for TAX surely this forum is run as a NOT-FOR-PROFIT kinda organisation.......????
Hmmmm
I'm gonna stop now cos I'm getting CoNfUsEd |

All taken care of ;)
The club is 'financed' by my Ltd Company - Hobson's Choice IT Solutions Ltd ... VAT registered and (I'm sure my accountant will be happy to confirm) EVERYTHING goes through the books ... it's the only way I can effectively finance the Clubs and keep them free to join ;)

Purely out of interest Simon... Is the club self financing or is it running at a loss? I'd hate to think that you were running such an excellent board at your own financial loss.
Simple ideas such as keyrings, mugs, t-shirts, rearscreen vinyls etc can provide good advertising and fundmaking opportunities. _________________ "we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist"

Right now, it's breaking even. That hasn't always been the case - the POCUK / MDOCUK have been ongoing for nearly six years - it's only now that the books balance, I'm not sure that I will ever recover the money and time invested to date... but hey! That's not why I've done it!

Now ... if everybody thought that way, not only would the clubs break even, there'd be a lot more in the pot, to help fund more/better gear for club events (for example)!

Thought about that already ... but to make that really work in the club's favour, that has to be 'in house' - ie the profit ALL comes back into the club ... I've had loads of offers from people who would like me to 'outsource' our promo gear, eg mugs, keyrings etc ... doing it 'in house' generates more revenue directly into the club, but costs more in 'up front' investment to keep unit prices low ;)
A great revenue generating opportunity for The Club is the Lifetime Membership scheme available in the Club Shop <-- Click to link ;)
Anybody who wants to financially support the future of the MDOCUK can help by signing up ;)
