In case anyone is looking at tyre choices at the moment, I can honestly say the Michelin Cross Terrain tyres are excellent. I've only had them on for a couple of days but have noticed immediately that they are more stable than Bridgestone Dueller H/Ts (which are also fantastic tyres). The sidewalls on the Mich Cross Terrains seem much stiffer and is reinforced - sort of like a light truck tyre - and it has really improved the cornering and ride comfort (less bouncing around).
They work pretty well off road as well - I've been for a scramble up a steep muddy grassbank and over a couple of rough tracks just now on the way back from the rubbish tip - and they're good.
They aren't cheap, but the general consensus is that they have a really good wear rate so I hope to have them on for a fair while.

Nasher - sorry - only just spotted your post! I can't compare them to the BFGoodrich all-terrains as I've never used the BFGs. They definitely seem to work well in the slippery mud though. Got up a small muddy slippery hillock where I park when dog-walking in 2WD. With the Bridgestone Dueller H/T I always had to engage 4WD.
