... On the M1- turned out to be a faulty oil pump.

Anyway I reckon the cheapest solution will be a new engine. Does anbody know what other Mitsubishi's share the same engine as my 1996 Delica 2.8td?

We are all very sorry to hear your story but I reckon most of us would like to know what the exact problem was. Did you have any warning? Has the vehicle been playing up lately? Any help may avoid the same thing happening to one of us. Cheers, Dean.

Well the Deli is getting a new engine fitted this week. The likely culprit was a knackered oil pump.

Well I finally have my Delica back! Had a new engine fitted by Jap Cars in Kent.
It took eight weeks as they had to wait for the 'new style' rocker cover. Apparantly the Delica's had a recall for the rocker cover and mine still had the old style- which is prone to leaking out oil when under any pressure- The reason my engine failed.
Does anyone know anything about this rocker cover thingy? Might be worth checking out- I'd hate for anyone else to fork out what I had to!

Glad you're back on the road!
That's interesting about the rocker cover - there's been a lot of discussion on the Pajero side about oil leaking at the back of the engine, and it usually gets put down to the half moon seals. Wonmder if the rocker cover is the problem there seeing as it's the same motor in the 2.8?
Any chance you can get more info on when the recall was instigated?

o.O we've still not worked out if the big black patch of oil looking substance left under the Deli every time we park it up is oil or more recently suggested, diesel.

would this be a likely suggestion as to what is happening with mine i wonder? it should be going in for investigation next week

No idea when the recall was instigated - or even if it was at all! All I have is hte info Jap Cars gave me- they seem to know their stuff though.

It apparantly is a common problem for both Pajero's and Delica's as they share the same engine. Oil spurts out of the rocker cover on high revs!

I was daft enough to 'lend' my Delica to someone who had to make a 350 mile round trip to Porstmouth- he must have gunned it all the way there and back- the engine failed shortly after this!

Jap Spares had loads of 2.8td engines in stock, but they all had the old style rocker over on them. They eventually found one for me in France of all places!

Check your engine regularly for oil just to the left and down from the intercooler- this is where mine had been spitting oil. On hindsight I should have took some pics for you guys.

The silver lining of this story is that this engine seems to run a lot better than the previous engine!

Did you get any warning noises or anything before the engine let go or did it just go suddenly??

Turned out to be a loose terminal on the starter motor! Sorry Mitsu!

Nope, old style rocker cover was allegedly the cause of that. The loose terminal was the cause of my Delica starting intermittently once I had got it back with the new engine.

have you checked with the mitsi head office if there were any recalls on your Deli? it may well be that they are liable for it giving way? just a thought Smile
