Hi, I have a CV joint that clicks when turning; I recently replaced the boots, cleaned out the old grease and then regreased and they were fine no sign of dirt or any thing other than grease in there.

So I am puzzled when now they appear stuffed; I removed the dust cap over the drive shaft end and found I have 6mm of axial play in the shaft! I will order some shims tomorrow and sort that as it's quick and easy to do.  I am wondering if the joint is okay and clicking due to the axial play or am I just dreaming.?🤔

To make matters worse, so far I haven't been able to find a replacement CV joint in the UK😭 so if it is stuffed, I might have to fit a second hand one.

Anyway, one step at a time, thoughts please,

Andy

Oh.
That could be the Bronze thrust washer worn.

I have seen reference to an "Upright bearing"  Sorry don't know about that.

Must admit I thought from memory that there was a brass thrust washer between the CV joint and hub but there is nothing showing on the workshop manuals.

That is the roller bearing inside the knuckle, which can break apart:-

They also require a new seal when replacing, as the old one gets trashed during removal:-

What I have is the CV joint splined end with axial movement through the drive flange about 6mm, the Knuckle joint seems fine.

That brass seal is this:-

Note that one side is smooth and the centre of the washer is shaped to fit the shaft, so you need to ensure it is fitted the right way round, or it doesn't go on as far as it should
You can see the Upright Needles bearings behind it:-

I have my second hand drive shaft now and want to swap the outer CV joint as I have new boots and a good inner joint on the original shaft.
But I can't remember how to get it off the shaft! My memory is failing me as I have done this a few times before but can't for the life of me work out out now. HELP😬!

I should say dismantle it as I can't swivel the joint to get the balls out,

You need a well mounted vice to grip the shaft - Then you need to be brutal.

The other part is retained by an internal circlip, which you cannot get to.
Method is to "Snatch" the outer part off - Use a big, yet hard mallet on the outer ring/shell  Shocked
If no big mallet, use big hammer, with a piece of Aluminium or copper twixt hammer and job.

Be careful not to damage the short part of the outer drive shaft.

I have separated these CVJ's, best done with an assistant.
Doing this, makes it really easy to replace Drive Shaft Gaitors.

Hope you understand the destructions  Question
