Hi   Its a Diesel 2.8 engine. It kept losing the coolant fast yet nothing appeared leaking. Put steel seal in. Worked for a little while. Tried another dose of steel seal. Worked for a short time agaiin. Then it stood for a couple of weeks, difficulty starting, filled with water as coolant empty, loud bang when it started, now some oil appeared in the coolant header tank. So asked at local garage about having the head done but they put me off as they said they could take it apart and find much more wrong like warped head or cracked engine. So I was thinking have my engine completely reconditioned

All the symptoms of head gasket fail - or worse, but common, cylinder head cracked/fail.

There is a mechanic in Garston (Quite close to you) that can repair this problem, he did so recently for a forum member.

I think the cost was around £750 - Inc. new cylinder head.
Please do not hold me to that price - It was not my car that had the work done.

Please contact me for the phone number.

Hopefully, he has a remedy for the amount of Steel seal now clogging your water galleries and/or radiator. Any type of leak seal is a definite no-no in these engines, due to the narrowness of water galleries at manufacturing, plus rusting/ furring up over a working lifetime with less than adequate coolant servicing for some part of it, not necessarily during your ownership.

Unfortunately the steel seal was also advised by the local garage mechanic. Should have asked on the forum first.

At a price hovering around £750 - £800 for refurbing your engine, which may have a cracked head or failed inner components, from using the leak seal, it would probably be cheaper to buy a refurbed one from a specialist company.
