Tried to fit a starter from Mitzy Bitz today for my L300 2.5 TD.

Got it on with not too much trouble. Turned the key. A horrendous grinding sound then followed after start up.

took it back off  then saw the toothed gear is projecting much further out than the other one that came off the van. Anyone installed one of these before. Its massively different. I've sent pictures over to Mitzy but just wondering if anyone has done this and can confirm that this is not right? Sent my Vin number. same number of teeth etc.

Old left, new right

Assuming the one on the right is the new one, I'd say the pinion gear is not retracting enough after starting, so is staying part meshed with the the starter ring on the flywheel - hence the noise.

It is the one on the right yeh. But that’s how it came. Would it come partly protruding like that? Surely it would be at its back most position. But I know what you’re saying as that’s my thoughts exactly. I just don’t think it’s the right one now.....

It should be in (as per the one on the left) on applying power I.E. turning the ignition key to start the engine, the toothed gear comes out and engages with the flywheel ( as per the one on the right), turns it to start the engine going, then retracts back inside the housing.

If it was out on receipt then they sent you a duff one.

Bit late, but there's a rim on the old cog protruding upwards leaving a collar with no teeth.
The teeth on the replacement go all the way up, perhaps the pinion was installed upside down?
