If there was one it would be, but there isn't one, so it isn't in it.  Wink

And before you say it; the Green Laning Forum does not have an Off Roading Q&A technical question section.

If it's on a towball it's towing.  Laughing

This portable winch worked well (if slowly) to pull out this well bogged 4x4 (albeit on a relatively flat pull, and pulling out backwards i.e. along his own ruts, and stuck only in soft mud):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtZ5Z3OC_5c

At the end of the vid it shows that the winch's max pull is only 3500lb (1600kg).

this vid shows a much more powerful winch doing a backwards pull (using a battery loose in the boot to power the winch):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltNVjlgEaTI

The pull is faster, and it works pretty well

Here's a small winch attached with just a mounting plate and an anchor chain:

The main problem with the mounting chain is finding a solid mounting point, but, it has the advantage of either front or rear fitting or even it can be fitted away from the vehicle as long as the battery is near it.
All depends how stuck you are, how much you plan to go off the roads and budget

The current plan is to buy one of these
http://www.goodwinch.com/shop/bak-rak-towball-mounting-kits/bak-rak-winch-mount/

and mount my existing 9500lb winch onto it (although it will be quite heavy).  I will then see if this works okay for front or rear recoveries (and also for side pulls, pulling a car onto a trailer or into the garage etc.)

If it's not a goer then I will buy one of these:

Dragon Winch Portable 5000

https://www.dragonwinch.co.uk/products/product-overview.aspx?pid=d6f00aee-0420-47b9-8244-4423d3eebc59
£156

Pretty impressive here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5FMd4rpVOM

Dragon winch 5000 LBS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KpTCR1UN4U

This is a smaller winch, but still gets a heavy 4x4 up a steep gradient:

This is mine:-

The winch is fitted to a plate that has an adapter to allow it to sit on the towball and swivel side to side as it winds in. It's wireless controlled, so I can operate it from the drivers seat, where it is warm and safe, and move my own vehicle quickly if I need to.

It's more than capable of pulling A Deli out of anything. You can download a pdf of the full specs from here:- http://www.ws4x4.co.uk/product/champion-12000-ewx-1

I'd never use a 5000lb winch on a Delica, unless I'm parked in a Tesco carpark

That looks HUGE. Are you doing heavy rescue, Lewis? And is that not a 2 man lift to get it onto your towball?

It's not too big, plus I only have to lift it out of the back of the van onto the towball then take the cover off.

Size wise the winch is small enough to fit in the gap on the Bullbar cowling. Weight wise with a steel cable it was far too heavy, which is why I switched it for a Dyneema one, which weighs almost nothing and is ten times stronger than steel, plus it will not split and whip out taking your head off like a steel one can.

Point 1. Hang a blanket over the middle of the tow rope, so it drops to the ground, rather than flail about in the air.
Point 2. Intentional weakening by using the same towball, when in reality you you swap it out for a new one.
Point 3. You would not have people standing so close to the run of the truck, when moving at that speed.
Point 4. Enaure what you are trying to recover is not intentionally fastened to a tree, to stop you recovering it.
Point 5. He's lucky he didn't rip his own axle off.

Basically it's overdramatised crap, purely to make a U-tube video.

Just a little video, how many carry spare tow balls?
Yep, made for fun and to show just what can happen.
Not saying it will, but it could, most failures I'd say would be to rusty chassis
And that bloke at Salisbury probably never thought he'd lose his foot standing near that stuck vehicle

No point trying to snatch a vehicle out of a bog - all you do is damage. Bog suction has to be overcome/released slowly. Better to fasten the rescue vehicle to a tree or another anchor vehicle, then slowly winch out the stuck vehicle.

I agree with Lewis.

I've used kinetic ropes numerous times, but I do a gentle, progressive pull i.e. walking pace max.  this is well within the strength/design envelope of the whole chain of items (including tow ball).

A high speed run up and a violent yank is asking for serious damage/failure somewhere in the chain.

I've used tow balls on gentle tug recovery, I find the kenetic strap best as it avoids the shock, done very slowly of course, but, as I've said, it has twisted the tow bar so the tow ball don't sit straight anymore, the tow ball I used was the sort with the tow pin thru it, rated at 3.5 tonne if I remember correct hmmm
