Hi All,

This is probably a newbie stupid question, i'm used to manuals and not really used an auto transmission before. What is the best way to utilise the autobox on an L300 to pull a conway cruiser from a stand still up a steep slope. The Cruiser is only about 750kg, do I need to be using the low gearing or is it fine to just be using drive? I don't want to put to much pressure on the box or is it pretty much well bomb proof?

Cheers

Depends on what you call a steep slope, and how long. I would try it in 2 position (or 1 if really steep) in 2WD (High range) That way it won't change up out of 2nd gear, or even try to. Just like a manual, the higher the gear, the more strain on the gearbox and auto clutches. If it gets to 1in4 (25%), you could probably engage 4WD low box, even on a good surface, if you find it's starting to skid, BUT you can't engage 4WD on the move, so best to make an educated choice before you start on the incline. Wind-up in the transmission on a reasonably short, steep slope will do less damage than spinning your wheels trying to get it to change up to too high a gear. These gearboxes, and diffs are pretty tough. I've never heard of anyone breaking one.
