Use 'GUNK' there's less chance of setting yourself on fire!

You can actually get a tin of special EGR cleaning spray! Got some from my local auto factors. |

Water based paint stripper is excellent for all fuel related gunge, especially petrol varnish.
Easy to wash out as well

Mines been sat on the driveway for about a year now, the constant soaking and drying has cleaned it up right nicely. |

Well low and behold the egr is actually blanked, done with a metal gasket and ball bearing, wanted to clean it to see if it would clear a hesitation at 60mph and cure the lumpy smokey start on the old girl, I guess I will just keep looking for the problem. :D |
