Had a trumatic weekend - trying to fit ERG blanking plate! On Saturday started at 0900 finished at 1600, just to fit ERG plate!

Why? I dropped it down beside engine! Then no way could I find it!

After climbing over and under couldn't find it. So took off tray under engine - no luck. Took out drivers seat to gain better access, then off with heat shield on turbo - narda!

Borrowed magnet on telescopic stick - used that and garden cane to probe every nook and cranny. Was about to give up and buy a Morris 1000 instead - a lot simpler to work on!!

Finally took off rest of engine cover - the bit with the hand brake lever attached. Success - I could see it - inside one of the engine mounts. Impossible to see or reach from under the van, just managed to fish it out with magnet on stick - impossible without - thanks to nieghbour who lent it to me!

Still a fight to replace bolts to fit it. Dropped it again - magnet needed again! I reckon I would not of got it fitted without the extra access. Replaced all the air hoses - started engine - every thing okay!

Rebuilt the van - just putting back drivers seat - found heat shield from turbo!! Had to take off air hoses again to fit it!

Big tip - one of the holes in the plate is not covered when it is fitted - see gasket. I suggest before trying to install plate loop a long bit of string through this hole and tie ends together and hook over something handy (oil filler cap). Then if you drop it you won't lose it!

At least removing rest of engine cover allowed me to inspect trubo hoses - I am worried about lack of power - see Trickie's post LACK OF POWER!!. Couldn't find any splits.

Sunday replaced all filters and changed engine oil. To check Turbo worry I also attached a Turbo boost guage (I was gioing to do this anyway). I say attached not fitted - didn't have time to install it instead of inclinometer just taped it to center divider next to gear lever!

Result - only 0.6 Bar boost! Not the correct, I think, 0.85 Bar. Now have ordered new turbo hose - turbo to inlet. Hope that is the problem. Will fit next weekend - if I feel brave enough!

I had also brought new cam and balance belts - no time left to even consider fitting them. Chickened out completly - she is now booked into local garage for cam belt change - £100.00 labour - worth it to save the nieghbours from a repeat of last Saturdays loud bad language!

Still considering the Morris 1000!

Hi Hawk ... what an ordeal Shocked Glad you got it sorted in the end though!

Just one question ... the blanking plates should be an exact fit ... there shouldn't be any spare holes??? Unless we didn't do our homework right?

Simon,

On the 2.5 gasket, one of the small holes IS exposed. It is an exact copy of the original gasket, which also has a small hole exposed. The EGR valve itself has an indent that means part of the gasket is always 'al-fresco' :? but this is normal Wink .

I have a 2.5 but the plate for the 2.8 is the right shape?
(I made my own from a scrap of stainless)
