Hi, the old girl is not running to well. The engine just does not pull well and hangs back, the feeling is its a fuel thing, and started some time ago when it just cut out after 3 miles or so. then started and then cut out etc. The fuel filter was changed and all was okay. Now there is this lack of power. It feels like a miss fire on a petrol car, takes place at higer speeds or when pulling up hill. I have a feeling that one of the fuel injectors is playing up, maybe blocked etc. Does anyone have any ideas out there, also whats the best place to go for injectors and what sort of price are they. thanks for your help, wendy

Hi Wendo
Certainly sounds like it could be a fuel problem, have you tried to put any fuel injector cleaner through the system ?
If you are getting the symptoms of cutting out then it sounds like the fuel pump seals have gone/going(do you get thius first thing in the morning or after parking up for a long time durin the day?) this is common on the 2.8 4M40 units and with this problem depending on how far gone they are could give rise to the other symptoms ,the actual replacement seals are very cheap however the labour charges can make it quite expensive for the parts that are being repl;aced, the price can range from £100. upto about £350 .
It could also be a possibility that there is an electrical problem with the throttle position sensor (TPS) altho id have thought this would manifest in more of a rev range etc than you are getting, the best bet is to go for another fuel filter change a fair dose of injector cleaner and see how that goes if not then it would probably be best to see if mits can put a dignostic test on it to see if it can be pinpointed with there machine.

Hope that helps atb

Hi there thanks for the input but a bit to much on the fuel cleaner. In answer to mark, yes I have used fuel cleaner around a 30% of cleaner to diesel at one point, no the car starts and runs okay 1st thing, so know fuel pump seals playing up. It all started with a blocked up fuel filter. It does point to injectors, so going back to the start where is the best place to get them and what sort of price are they. Please, Please no more on fuel cleaner. Hope someone can help out there

To the above person, people going on about diesel cleaner, is okay. But it does not address in any shape or form the fault with the car. I have given the facts and asked for a view point, also the best place to go for fuel injectors. This is no way means people should take over the topic talking about cleaners.
Hope thats to the point, and thankyou NOT for your input.

As you may have noticed i have in fact split the topic so the only replies left within this thread are relateing only to the problem in hand,i hope that explains it all, unfortunately some topics do go "off"topic easily whilst discussing possible solutions to a problem but in fact this sometimes has a benefit to the original poster as to a possible resolve to there problem or at least a means of illiminating certain things,as for fuel cleaners there are lots on the market and i beleive by posting more than one type it then gives everybody an idea of what the product is like, hopefully you will find a resolve to your problem and get it fixed as soon as possible but in the meantime I'm sure people posting here are only trying to help,as are we all.atb

Hi wendy,

Have you looked in the yellow pages under "Diesel Fuel Injection".
There are people who specialise in diesel fuel systems. They have all the diagnostic equipment, along with ultrasonic injector cleaning tanks etc.

Give one a ring, they may be able to give you an idea of whats wrong and how much it is likely to cost over the phone.

I would personally try this route before splashing out on new injectors.

:D

Wendy, your best bet is to go to a diesel specialist and get them to give the fuel system a once over. To recondition the injectors you'd be looking at about £150 but this should improve economy and hence pay for itself.
Friend of mine has just had a reconditioned fuel pump fitted and the injectors reconditioned for just over £600. Most of that was the pump.
Like I say - injectors alone then about £150.

Try Lucas (LSUK). They do ultrasonic cleaning of injectors. Had my petrol ones done. Presumably they do diesel ones too. They do a good job though at about £75 for 4

Thankyou, I don,t thing it is the pump, more like the injectors, or an injector sticking, or blocked. I will ring around and find out a bit more. I hate going to garages with know idea of whats wrong, gives them an open channel to rip me off and I hate that.
Bob Gill, what exhaust system do you use on your lightweight, I have a lightweight also fitted with a rover V8, but the exhaust is so rusted out I can,t tell what its from, can you help???
thanks wendy.

Wendy, your best bet is definitely to go to a diesel specialist and let them know how knowledgeable you are. Sure you'll be fine.

On a petrol injection engine you should ensure that all injectors are flowing at the same rate or within a small percentage of each other. Is this as critical with a diesel engine, as you say Wendy, you suspect an injector. Perhaps they are not all equal?

Due to it raining over the coming weekend, I will be spending time in the garage with the diesel pressure meter. I intent to check the pressure to the pump an dfrom the pump and then to each injector in turn. The more I think about it and drive the car The more it logs injector, these do go down at a rate of knots and can give all sorts of fun and games. I have also send off for a new filter, and injetor washers just in case I need to pull one or two. I will let you know how I get on next week
