Well done
Seven chains in one day, its got to be a record. Took me all day to do mine.(okay i did do the guides and take the front of the engine off but still). Big round of applause, hope you didn't get too wet. Were there any problems encountered through the day. _________________ 1996 2.8 Jasper,

Wasn't me either! It was Carstairs.
My thoughts are the same as everyone elses.
Thanks to Sock and his Dad for the work!! 8-)
Many thanks to Lynn for the Tea & Toast, Tea and Biscuits, Tea and Sausage, Eggs, Beans and Toast, and Biscuits.
Dave (Tonkatruck) and I had fun on the way home and couldn't get over how our Deli's sailed up and over the Pennines at Windy Hill to Yorkshire. Dave almost had to apply for a pilots licence!
I didn't get the chance to take any photo's this time, I was too busy thinking about Sock using the angle grinder on my engine, :? Sparks all over the place . _________________

One thing we all noticed...
none of us had a chuffing noise...
all of us had our tensioners open to the point were changing the chain was a good idea before chuffing occured...
New chain and the engine was smoother and the engine had more go in it !
So thanks for making our Deli's better Sock... and I'd recommend a chain change to anyone who is planning on keeping their Delica's for any length of time.
Just like a vehicle with a cambelt.. you change them to be sure.. I'd from now on do the same with a timing chain....
When doing the chain, its the perfect time to set and adjust your TPS, kick down cable and a couple of washers under the turbo wastegate bolts _________________ Regards

There is only one:-
Dry your feet and change your socks, at least 3 times a day!
Do not like many misbegotten souls, or should that be soles, wear a plastic bag over your socks inside your boots.
That will only make your feet sweat and worsen the condition. _________________

Have done this job today and rectified a major cock up along the way, so thought I would share the results here.
Firstly Socks instructions in combination with the pictures in this thread are a good guide as to what is required.
Secondly you don't need an angle grinder to cut the chain, a dremel and grinding stone are more than adequate but a lot less spectacular!!!
Thirdly, if you make the following cock up here is how I rectified it. Once the chain was threaded through somehow I had managed to develop some slack on the tensioned side of the chain (LHS fom front, I suspect that the cam over rotated whilst turning the engine over by hand and simply turning it back would have sorted it but I managed to make it worse) in trying to rectify that I caused a bigger problem I managed to misalign the camshaft relative to the crank. After lots of swearing and sitting down to think about it (4m40 manual in hand) I could see that there are only two cogs involved and I reasoned (correctly) that as long as the timing marks on the crank (I used three rather than one, much easier to see small errors) are in the correct place and the chain pulled good and tight either side but well clear of the cam shaft cog, then the cam can be moved independently back to TDC and your timing will be correct (you can't go to far either way becaue you will get the valves hitting the piston and locking the engine). It is also perfectly okay with the chain tensioner removed to rotate the engine backwards this will be necessary to get the two chain cogs back into the correct alignment (bearing in mind that the chain is still split at this point) I turned the engine over by hand a few dozen times to be sure that it didn't lock up. Fired up fine first time and no metal on metal drama! Whilst I wouldn't recommend doing it this way, if you get yourself in a jam and lose the relationship between the cam and crank it is certainly one way of sorting it out. _________________ Deli's dead...Currently breaking. |
