I can second Ian's comment that you shouldn't buy any second hand ones unless they are like new (i.e. white/clear plastic with all internal webbing visible NOT dark yellowed plastic with crystal white patches where the plastic has got over-brittle!)
Just not worth the risk - especially when you factor in the pressure these things run under and the damage they can do when they let go!! _________________ '93 L300 Mystery Machine (Now in the hands of a new owner)

Hi Chris
A bit late now I know but mentioning you are a member of this club will usually get you a discount from some Mitsu main dealers, give it a try when you go in to collect it.
Good Luck

Wish I had seen this post earlier! Strangerover has just emailed me to say he had got some samples from a company in Taiwan (£60 a pop! inc postage to UK Mainland)

PS. My tank was not brittle, it was soft and chalky around all the joints.
I had already repaired the return pipe tube, which lasted 12 months or so, but the tank has started to turn a green/yellow in colour and had become chalky in texture.
Obviously it was leaking (about a 2pints a week), so I bought one off Mark.
When I took the old one off all the joints arount the pipe connections (two at the bottom and one at the top) had become soft and porus, even the joint around the cap was soft, like a soggey ice cream cone.....
Now I feel like driving around with my bonnet off to show off my nice new shiney tank......errmm, maybe not
PPS. I don't know what the old one was made of, but it has left a nastey rash on my arms where it has touched whilst taking it out, itchy as hell, a bit like the itch you get from fiberglass in the loft.........feels quite christmasy actually. _________________ Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.... |

Hi Guys
Yep mine has gone soft as well!
Tried Viagra to no avail! ..........(and I get it on prescription!) Ha! a hard man is good to find as my wife says!
No but serious - (if you can now) my tank sprung a leak and the only thing I could do at the time was a temp repair with 'liquid metal'.
I has worked for now but it will fail again soon I'm sure.
Why the soft thing I don't know - as I was prepping the area it just fell apart - there is no contamination.
Hopefully I can replace it soon - but finances are a bit tight.

Woh! No, I didn't see that - even more glad I did it today now.
My old tank was powdery at the top, you could peel layers away (it was like fibreglass), all in this soft strip where the tank was exposed to UV light through the crack in the bonnet. |

Reading all the horror stories about header tanks having the tensile properties of a Fabergé egg & going off like a pound of C4 if you look at it too long, yep, mine got the traditional filler / wrap / clay addition around the hose spigot. Anyway, is it possible to swap it for a totally different type unit? I've seen 'em on car mod / custom sites. Alloy & stainless and other shiny drool inducing metals, thing is, does it need to be a certain volume or would it do if the pipes were something like? I've found some cool looking things for Evo's & Scoobies which are nothing like the originals, more tubular with clear level vials. Any ideas? Don't wanna pay £80 for a beige plastic blob if I can get a ruby encrusted gold plated puppy for £40. _________________ John

Hi Chezzi,
If you change your mind and decide you want a standard plastic one, give strangerover a shout. They're not 80 quid either.

It depends how much buggering about is involved to fit a none standard tank. The current unit holds a litre of water i think....
Where have you seen the modded units....
