Talking to a few garages this past weekend about an import for the wife and heard the same disturbing story from both of them... apparently, part of the changes to the new SVA test includes that cars after 1997 will have to have a comparison certificate in order to pass the SVA... which means that as there is no Delica in the UK, you won't be able to import anything newer than a 1997 Delica... along with many other types of imports...

Not good news Sad

Andy, what's required is a "model report" for noise and emission and the vehicle needs to go through ESVA. This is the type approval process and is done on vehicles individually. The "model report" (or comparison certificate as the guys you spoke to are incorrectly calling it) is currently being prepared for the Delica and will be ready in a matter of week. This will be rented out at £250 by ModelReports.com to those who are submitting 1997 and newer Delicas to ESVA.
The reason this change has come into force is that the noise and emissions regulation between UK and Japan diverged in 97 so it could no longer be assumed that a vehicle approved for Japan met the same requirements as one in the UK.
So DON'T PANIC - the guys who told you this probably don't even know what a model report is and the purpose of it.
Lastly - there is no SVA anymore, it's ESVA now (enhanced SVA).
