Hi, I went out on Sunday in the van and noticed the volt meter on the dash reading a constant 12v; great I thought, my wife needs it next week and the battery will soon be dead.  Anyway, I put it on charge and ordered a 120A alternator, paying the extra for a fast delivery and it turned up today. I was disappointed though as it meant I would have to fit it tonight but I put on a brave face and went and got the van out of the garage only to see the volt meter reading a healthy 13.5v! Great! I checked it out at the battery and everything was good!
Needless to say, tonight I did not change the alternator but I wonder how long till I find I have to change it.
Anyone had anything similar?

Andy

Just wondering when the massive leap in ambient temperatures took place with you? When the sudden thaw took place here (Cumbria) it went from -4 and very dry  to +8 and humid overnight, resulting in all cold surfaces covered in moisture/condensation. even under cover. Could this be a (temporary) cause of your anomaly?

That would be very good and quite possible; when I get chance I will look into it further - or be forced into it!

Inside the Alternator - Possible "sticky brushes"

WARNING, If or when removing Alternator - A. Remove 80 Amp fuse from the fuse box next to right inner wing - or
B. Disconnect battery, this is to prevent blowing the 80 Amp fuse.

Easier to disconnect the battery, as the fuse is bolted in and a bit of a bother to get out.  Shocked

You're quite right there Lewis. And two different sizes of 1/4" drive sockets.

The reason I said remove the fuse, is that if a car has "Preset" electric devices, disconnecting the battery would, may/require re-setting such devices.

"Each to their own" I prefer the hardware route over the software route.
(But I can spot scammers, as you know (Just letting the scammers know  Wink ))

P.S. I will write a comment about scams in the Common Room section.

I had something similar, caused by a slightly leaky boost hose dripping oil onto the alternator.
I fixed it by setting the hand throttle at around 2500rpm, and spraying brake and clutch cleaner directly into the alternator from outside...

I DON'T recommend this, it's bloody dangerous.., but it did work about 50000k ago.   Rolling Eyes

I'm going to take my spare alternator to a local rebuilders whilst he's still in business, it's always good to have a spare.
