When the side door is opened the steps are either late in opening nearly hitting the leg if not careful or keep going in and out at other time on own its own, any advice please?

First thing to do, as it's obvious there is power to the step,  is to check the loom connector and lubricate the slides and hinged parts under the vehicle.

I also recall one member who discovered that disconnecting the battery and them reconnecting it resett the system, so it worked as it should.

If you are also a member of the Aussie club then check their download section for a pdf on the step maintenance.

Is there a delay to the interior light also? Test the door switch as the step actuates with the switch. If it's sticky it could be delayed in switching.
If that's it then easy fix to get to the switch with some electrical cleaner/lubricant.

Bare in mind that the interior light switch can be turned off, from functioning.
