If I were to swap in a different instrument cluster would it pick up the original odometer reading or the one from the "donor" vehicle?
The reason I'm asking is that the LCD odometer has blackened, (don't know the technical term).

No!

The reading is fixed in the unit. You need to make a note of old and replacement readings, preferably with a supporting photo.
Put that with the MoT documents for if there is any query over the mileage by a tester or buyer if your selling.

I had to go to "Plan B" because the donor panel read nearly 240,000 whilst mine was less than 110,000 Sad

Also my panel had been digitally reprogrammed from KM to miles whist the other had an external "convertor" spliced into the wiring.
I decided therefore to strip down the units and swap the LCD screens.

Its upward of 40 years since I happily de-soldered and replaced components on printed circuit boards and soon realised the hands weren't as steady or the eyes as well focussed Smile
Instead I carefully cut the good LCD close to the board and the duff one 1/4" away from the board. (They slide out easily)
I then sleeved the "stumps" with heat shrink sleeving, slipped the good LCD into place and shrunk fit the overlapping ends.

Hey, it worked a treat Very Happy

My one remaining issue is, now its all back together, the rev counter is a bit sluggish Confused

Nice work.

The hand eye movement is down to the Gin in the tea.  Laughing
