|
Hi guys,
Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. I've drained the ATF oil from the sump (originally measuring about 3.5ltrs) and after putting back the same amount I'm getting dipstick readings all over the place from empty to fully up dipstick. I've started and let idle, cycled gears and then checked, again all over the place. Any ideas. I'm sure I'm doing something simple wrong. |

You are leaving engine running during test
Do Not switch off engine whilst testing/checking fluid level
Also ensure car is on level ground/surface.

I drained the atf via the sump plug, refilled with new oil through dip tube and tried to set cold level with no engine running as stated in a manual I have. The trouble is when putting new oil in through dip tube it's taking 15-20 mins to settle into the gearbox to take a new reading. I waited until it settled and then started engine, cycled gears and took another reading. If it needed more fluid, I added more but it seems to stay in the dip tube forever, slowly working it's way in. I'm wondering if the oil is too viscous maybe? Or blocked dip tube/filter. I'm using Comma MVATF Plus (PSF). |

Comma MVATF+PSF is equivalent to Dia Queen ATF-PA; Dexron® II; Dexron® II D; Dexron® IIE; Dexron® IIE +, so okay to use.
It is fairly viscous though, so takes time to get down the dipstick tube. One trick is to warm it up by putting the unopened container in hot water, which helps tt run a little faster, when using a large funnel and tube. The trick here is to go make a cuppa, as the funnel drains down, which takes your mind off it.
My preferred method is to use a 500ml stainless steel oil syringe to force it down the tube faster.

Many thanks Lewis.
I did email Comma and they confirmed it was their nearest ATF to the Diaqueen SPii
Now I know it's a case of making small adjustments and taking time to leave it to drain down I can take my time.
Just one other question, do these transmissions have a breather? As I am wondering if there is one and if it's blocked. |

The breather is the dipstick tube, otherwise the ATF would come out when it is hot and under pressure.
That is why I use a syringe to fill it, to give it time to let air out as I refill the syringe.
Using a narrow tube and funnel, such as those clear water ones used in caravans, which are narrower than the dipstick would feed ATF in, whilst air escaped around it. _________________

okay great, thanks for replies Lewis. Much appreciated.
Just out of interest, has anyone tried rebuilding one of these transmissions with rebuild kit? |
