I like to change the automatic gearbox fluid and filter on a regular basis. The filter used to be OEM only, but Milners now supply an aftermarket item at an attractive price (plastic composite not metal). There is a small magnet in the sump tray which can be a useful diagnostic tool if anything unhealthy were to be going on.

Does anyone know if the filter can be accessed without having to disconnect the exhaust outlet manifolds on the V6? I am told that the sump tray will not drop down sufficiently for the filter to be removed # unless the exhaust is out of the way.

Thanks.

Have you been under and looked at the layout ?

The exhausts are on the engine block.

The gearbox is sited at the back of the engine, the exhausts are not connected to it.

There is the gearbox support bar below it, which covers the rear end of the sump cover.

I've had three Deli's and have never removed the transmission sump to replace the filter, which is not a service item, as I ensure my ATF is changed regular, to prevent crud building up.

Of course, Lewis.....I have been under there countless times.

I am not referring to our dear old 4M40, this is the V6 petrol with a twin run of exhaust from the manifolds, which join directly under the gearbox sump with very little clearance. On the diesel, the filter can be accessed once the support bar is moved (temporary support required).

I am inclined to agree that regular change of the ATF fluid, and check on the condition of what comes out, can be enough. I have done the fluid change myself on other occasions, and know about techniques for getting as much as possible of all of the old oil out (not so easy).

I sometimes go to my gearbox specialist because they have a machine specifically for purging the system. They recommend re-placing the filter, and I think it a sensible precaution if keeping the vehicle for a long time. On my diesel L400 the filter was surprisingly clean after 100,000 miles. The little magnet which I mentioned is a clever diagnostic as well, and it is reassuring to check it.

The point of my question is to double check whether or not I have been given correct information by my gearbox specialists, who tell me that the sump tray has to drop down further than one might imagine (8 or 10 inches I think they said) in order to extract the filter. They have worked on a few Pajeros, but I am their only Delica.....and they are conscientious professionals to the point of being picky (better safe than sorry).

Nevertheless, I would have thought that it has to be good practice to replace the filter from time to time....if only to confirm that it isn't too mucky. I was tempted this time because Milners now offer an aftermarket filter.

I'm not talking about a 4M40 Diesel Deli, as none was mentioned.

I was under a 6G72 Petrol 3L V6 last week, helping a club member refit propshafts, and a problem with his transfer case.

Having looked at it very closely in a search for a manufacturers plate, my comment was based on what I saw whilst under it.  Wink
