Hi guys

My 1994 v6 Delica was imported ftom japan last year and have always pumped my tyres using my own clamp on type pump. Taking the van to Tescos the other day and tried to top up the tyres, the filler couldn't get a good seal over the tyre valve and couldn't pump up or give a pressure reading but just let air out of the tyre. so was wondering whether Japanese valves are slightly smaller than uk valves as I know the pump at my Tescos works fine for my other cars.

If there is a difference is there an adapter available so I can use supermarket pumps?

Cheers

Jon

Effectively there are three types of valve in use. A schrader valve, used in most countries, including the UK, is 8mm wide. The other two are Presta and Dunlop, both of which are 6mm wide. The Dunlop is used extensively in Japan.  Both of those require an adapter, which is referred to as a Presta adapter.

There are also differences in valve lengths and widths used in inner tubes and tubeless tyres, but they all have the 8mm or 6mm end width. If you buy a tyre pump then they normally have the Presta adapter included with the others, for inflating footballs airbeds and Lilo’s, usually marked up as for inflating bicycle tyres.
