|
|
Hi all,
I'm having continued trouble with my recently purchased L300 - Latest issue is a squeal when starting up from cold and a low idle speed (around 500rpm) until the engine warms up a bit. The two seem to be connected as the squeal goes away when the revs pick up to normal (750rpm). This is a different squeal to the alternator belts as I replaced those recently to fix that very issue!
My battery charge seems a little low so I'm wondering that could be the cause? It's showing 12.3v.
The van has had a timing belt change and new water pump last year.
Any wisdom gratefully received! |

If it's any comfort, mine has been like that for the last 11 years.
If battery level is low, short of overtightening the belts, you'll get a bit of squeal straight after start-up until the glow-plugs go to half-power or shut off.
To overcome the slow idle, which isn't helped by the alternator's increased drag from giving power to the starter motor and plugs, I just set the hand throttle (choke knob) to give around 750rpm until either the plugs go off, or I start driving.
Don't forget to release it, or you'll have difficulty stopping!
Check you alternator belts for tightness, they may have slackened off a little as they bedded in, too much squealing, and they will get burnished shiny by friction and lose their grip. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Ha, thanks Andy - that is of some comfort!
I don't think mine has a hand throttle / choke. Where should I be looking? It's a 1995 2.5 TD
I'm driving up to Scotland in a couple of weeks from the south coast so I might put a new battery in anyway to be on the safe side. Whilst I'm here - what is the standard battery for the L300? The one that keeps popping up in my searches is the 335 but that looks bigger than the one I have fitted currently.
Thanks very much for your help. |
