I am looking for a step-by-step Guide to First Registration for a new import from Japan. Apologies, but I am rubbish at navigating the Search options.

I have bought a 3L V6 1998 L400 (only 64,000km = 40,000miles), which I found on the Japanese Auctions sites and instructed Algys Autos to bid for me. They ship to Bristol.
The usual procedure is for the vehicle to be cleared through Customs and collected from the Docks by their partner garage Hallen Imports, who will do all the necessary....for a fee of course.

I know that paperwork which confirms the Duty and VAT have been paid is the first step to obtain NOVA clearance from HM Revenue and Customs.

I am thinking of doing the Application for First Registration and Licensing myself. I would have the vehicle transported to Yorkshire and use my own local service outlet for any work that might be required. The only essential add-on for Mot is a Rear Foglight. It is still legal to have the speedo in kph, which can be handy if driving in Europe and doesn't require opening up the dash. Other work on a vehicle of this age is an unknown until I get a good look at it.

Has anyone had personal experience of completing the DVLA Registration themselves?
