Is it a tilt switch inside the tailgate? Or magnetic switch? Just guessing.

It is a contact switch inside the tailgate lock.
The cover of the roof lamp is also a switch, push it to the left for off, to the right for on and when central it is auto, based on the tailgate opening and closing.

NB: Do not push the open tailgate switch lock into the lock position, otherwise your in for a worl of pain.
