Has anyone changed these stem seals on a 4M40 without removing the head ?
If so, what method did you use ?
PS I’m not too interested if your friend at work did it once on a Ford escort, I’m more interested in our finest marque, the L400 limousine.
Thanks. _________________ Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.... |

A) Ooops - Who wrote that gobbledegook
I have used a technique in the past. Remove a Spark Plug or Glow Plug, find or make an adaptor to screw fit into the hole.
The adaptor will need a smaller tube fitted to it to accept rubber hose connected to a compressed air line.
The compressed air will keep the valves closed.
The tricky bit, is to find a position for the piston - valves closed, when compressed air is introduced it does NOT force the piston down.
This is easy on a Manual vehicle, handbrake ON engage top gear, that'll stop the engine rotating.
With an Auto box somewhat more tricky, really need to get TDC very accurately, to stop engine rotating.
A socket on the crank pulley, with a long bar "jammed" against chassis can help.

Thanks for the information, thankfully I don't have to do the job, my oil ingestion was not infact my valve stem oil seals, it was my turbo.
I have change it the easy and quick way by using a cartridge which bypasses the need for taking loads of seized exhaust parts off.
All good. _________________ Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.... |
