Hi I have a 92 L300 and I need any info regarding fitting an automatic transmission oil cooler. At the moment the two cooler pipes are linked together with a rubber pipe. Has anybody got a photo or any info regarding the size and original fitting location or has anyone fitted an aftermarket cooler. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

You will still have the cooler built into the radiator.

Hi Ben,
It sounds like your van is similar to mine. The trans oil cooler was missing and just a rubber loop connecting feed and return pipes just behind the front bumper on the drivers side. I got an after-market oil cooler, 250mm by 130mm and strung it up under the drivers foot well, where the old cooler would have been. I cut and re-welded the 'legs' on the cage that would have held the original cooler so it's tucked up further into the gap behind the step here - just to keep it more out of harms way. The cooler sits behind this and is strung up on thick cable ties. I'll try to grab some photos tomorrow.

I didn't want the bother of having to graft flexi hoses on to the rigid pipes so I got a cooler which takes push-on rubber connections (with jubilee clips of course). The worst part of the job was removing the old tube from the rigid pipes and attaching the new without losing too much ATF.

Ian - I thought mine must have the oil cooler in the rad too, since there was no cooler behind the drivers step. But, when I traced the pipes they passed right under the rad and to the 'short-circuit' rubber loop described above. I'm not sure which model/dates the in-rad vs. under step locations applies to - I had assumed for years mine was one of those in the rad as you describe Smile
I don't know why the under-step cooler had been removed from mine (or Ben's) - perhaps the original had sprung a leak at some point?

Mine has both, one in the rad and one under the step.

Time I fitted the one you retrieved for me from Carlisle, Tim! How long ago? PS V jealous of the apparent clean condition of your undersides.
