I picked one up for touring around Australia in the next few years. They have been one of my dream vehicles here in the states.

My goal is to swap in a d4bf Hyundai engine into it eventually. Right now I believe it has the stock 4g52.

I'm trying to figure out if this van uses wide bell housing patterns like the 4d56 or a narrow bell housing like the fwd 4 cylinders and very early rwd stuff.

Does anyone know off the top of their head?

Don't know the 4G52 engine.
I had a '88 L300 in the Falkland Islands with the 4D56T
I now have a'93 L300 with the 4D56T in the UK.

Sorry can't help with the bellhouse sizes as never had to deal with them.
I find the 4D56T engine a solid reliable unit and has plenty enough power for normal use with the 4 speed Auto box.
It comes into it's own when off road or green landing as you don't have to keep slipping the clutch( the '88 was a 5 speed manual), and as all the roads down South were gravel/rock apart from the Port Stanley the capital a lot of clutch slipping went on.

doesn't really help me with bell housing bolt pattern.. I'm familiar with the engines, just not sure if they ran a wide or narrow bell housing in the vans in the 4WD. I'm hoping wide as I don't recall Mitsubishi ever using a narrow bolt pattern in a 4WD.

I thought it might help you identify which size/output your engine is. The larger ones with more power and torque would possibly have a larger clutch and so bell housing.

Hi,

Petrol to diesel would be a bit of work - what are your local laws and taxes like?
They are getting tight on diesel here.

Another option would be a more modern development of the 2.0 petrol - out of a lancer or gallant maybe

Swap the trans as well if going from petrol to diesel as the gear ratios will be well out of whack, it'll work but drive awfully.

Could possibly have to change the diffs to suit the engine as well.
