I'm currently piecing together a vw 1.9tdi engine conversion in an L300. since I'm making an adapter I'm free to choose any gearbox I like. the favourite so far is either a manual from an L200 or a jeep cherokee however it would be a lot easier to just slap everything on the auto box that's already in the van. Part of the reason for the conversion is power but also MPG so looking to see if the L300 auto box has torque converter lockup. I've read through the dealer manual for the auto box but it doesn't mention it so I'm guessing thats a no. just wanted to check its not called something else and I've missed it? Thanks, Jack.

I remember reading somewhere that is how the 4th gear/overdrive is achieved, basically locking the torque converter to the output end of the gear cage, effectively bypassing the three lower gear clusters in the cage, and eliminating the usual torque converter fluid friction losses at cruising speeds. Seems to work for me - my L300 returns 27-29mpg on  long 60-65mph motorway runs.

The Transmission Workshop manual is located here, which may help:- https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B_VNtPLlw6UzQWs4RUJJRDh4bVk
