As many know my dmf broke spectacularly last summer.

All fixed lovely, but...beforehand it was in fwd (four red lights showing)

When I collected it there were two problems

1. No lights showing anymore. When queried was told that when dissembled it was in 4WD so mechanic pushed lever to 2WD and all lights went out, which is obviously a problem!! Confused

2. All power seems to have gone/its noisier I'm sure.

Ffs! What next?

Any ideas on either front.is it likely that there was more damage than just the clutch and dmf?

Anyway, any ideas, re the loss of power, and loss of fwd since it all got fixed up?

Silly (on my part) question time. I want to be sure I understand the problems.

FWD, by that do you mean 4 WD

Generally, FWD means Front Wheel Drive.
Now you have no Wheel/axle engaged lights. Is this correct Question

Because the lights don't illuminate, that does not mean that 4 WD is not engaging.
4 WD is mechanical - Not electrically operated.

Mostly - The lights only indicate the floor lever position.
There are other switches connected to the vacuum operated parts.
I'm not an expert for this part of the car - - - I expect someone more knowledgeable than me may give more help.

As I recall, you have your car in 4 WD most of the time, or very frequently,
have you checked the dash bulbs

Its quite common for them to "blow", especially the bulbs for the rear axle.

Lack of power - I don't wish to "sound" authoritarian here, so "please bear with me"
Are you sure, and not expecting more power

If there is definitely a loss of power, my question = When was the last time you had a Fuel filter changed

And only using neat Dino fuel. My car does not like "Bio Wink

fuel additives" in cold weather.

I understand your questionning the validity of 'power' issues, but its noticeable, particularly on inclines, theres noise instead of.power Confused

Part of the downtime this last summer was a complete service, including fuel filter.

I don't drive primarily in 4WD, but 2WD, only using 4WD on hills and offroad, over bumps etc.

Does that make anything clearer in terms of whats gone wrong?

It also doesn't 'feel' like its 'gone into' 4WD

Simple method to check if 4 WD is working.
In 2 WD, go for a drive on a muddy slippery field, when car stops due to wheel/s spinning, engage 4 WD, if car still stuck, then 4 WD may not be working. Pay someone to tow you out of field. Shocked

More scientific method =

Jack up car on both axles, place axles on substantial axle stands.

Start engine, in 2 WD engage D, the rear wheels should rotate.

Engage 4 WD, front & rear wheels should rotate.

I have done this test a few times, as such, fully equipped to carry out the test.

Just for clarity, Deker, which 4WD are you recommending, -difflocked, or viscous diff drive? (is the latter "super select?)

For the test I suggest (wheels off road) makes no noticeable difference.

Not keen on first option as I'm not prepared to deliberately risk getting stuck in a field! Local farmers with their muddy fields have plenty enough work to do without me playing silly buggers in their fields Very Happy

Will get it off ground and try it out. Ntwohpd be lovely to find its just a case of all lights blowing together, odd, weird to all go together but lovely and easily resolved

As for the power loss not so easy

Looking behind the dash is easy.

To do so you will first need to remove the steering wheel surround top cover screw in the recessed hole underneath. then drop the steering wheel locking catch and lower the steering wheel to its lowest position and prise off the steering wheel top cover. NB: If you want to get into the rest of the wiring under the dash then also remove the four bolts circled in red in the photo below.

Unfasten the two upwards screws in the top of the dash unit and lift the grey console surround out. You will then see the four screws holding the display unit in place. Unfasten these then lift and and tilt the console forward so you can access the back. The bulbs are in removable holders, from which the bulbs are easily pulled out.

The photo below will help workout which connectors go where.

Bulbs and LED's

Background lamp: Type 501 (LED = T10).

Push Fit 501 Wedge Base 12 Volt 5 Watt Capless Sidelight Bulb:

Dash warning light: Type 286 1.2v capless wedge bulb (LED = T5)

Type 286 1.2v capless wedge bulb

No, I'd say it's just noisier engine, like tue higjer revs and strain but then no extra power..
