i am planning an extended trip, assume many thousands of miles over several journeys
so i am researching as preparation
this couple drove the length if the americas
in this video (2 mins 45 secs) they refer to having free wheel hubs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lXBE2sS8z4

does anyone have a view on these ?

Delica specific (oem ?)
advantages / disadvantages
manual or automatic operation
manufacturer

note, supplementary question

is there a long term cost offset benefit in terms of mpg ? and/or lower maintenance / wear ?

You have Superselect gearing in the L400, so don't need adaptations, which require you to get out of the Deli and manually turn each Hub on and off, rather than simply use the Superselect gearstick to select between 2WD and 4WD.  Wink

I have them fitted for offroading in case a cv joint goes I can still trundle home. High milers reckon you get better fuel consumption too but not sure on that I just fill er up when needed.

Mine has free wheeling hubs on the front, but then it is an L300, they are auto lock.
However I can't use them locked in two wheel drive as I don't have a central differential.
I don't think that they affect the performance (?)much.

Further to last I just realised there would be no point having them locked in two wheel drive as there is no power to them!!!. Nav

Same as the L400, with SuperSelect gearing, the floor lever takes it in and out of 4WD, so the manual hubs are not required.  Wink

On the L300 you have to select 4WD and then drive forward slowly till you get the clunk as the Autohubs lock.
On going back to 2WD you have to select it and then reverse slowly till you get the clunk again as the Autohubs disengage.

I have never looked underneath while driving along in 2WD to find out if all the prop-shafts are turning! They really need to be disconnected from drive at both ends to get maximum mileage.
