So it finally let go.
315000kms over 31 years and the engine finally decides it's had enough.
Thought it might be the turbo as didn't appear to overheat, just lost power with smoke, but trying to start it and lots of white/grey smoke so looks like water vapour.

Just waiting for the recovery to relay it back to me today then I'll start head scratching on the options:-
1. Rebuild as is
2. Put in a cleaner Petrol lump + LPG
3. Chicken shed

However what a fab last journey - long weekend in cornwall, stayed on the beach in Sennen Cove for far to long then caned it up the A30. *boom*
Recovery gave us a courtesy car so we could get the kids home instead of waiting for a truck to be free (AXA breakdown via Grove and Dean insurance)

Oh no...  Sad  Sad
That's very sad news indeed!
Really hope it can be sorted, somehow... Either way please let us know what happens.
I still hope to meet the Pig in person some day; when I was looking to get into Deli ownership the Pig was definitely one of the inspirations (I don't even like pink! ;)

Electrify it? Might be a world first for an L300...!

I past you on the A31 at Winterbourne Zelston on Friday evening, I was on the bike taking a run over to Southampton.

Shame about the engine

We'll got it back to garage around the corner.
Turned it over, wouldn't catch but tried and it sounds down on one cylinder.
Need to get a better look at the weekend, but seems likely a head or head gasket issue. Not uncommon as we all know.
Garage going to have a poke around and do a sniff test to see what they can find.

I know everything is fixable, but also everything else is old too so need to really look at the costs.

Hmmm...

Pour water into the radiator and it comes out of the exhaust.

So not the turbo...

Sounds Like the Head Gasket.
If so; very lucky and a cheap repair.  Very Happy

No compression on two cylinders, so probably not the turbo.

Head coming off in the next week or so

Still waiting for the garage, in a long queue with a few staff holidays thrown in.
In the meantime I then get distracted by jumbo panel van camper conversions with double beds and en suites...

What I was going to ask through - Milner heads - anyone got any experience? Think it may be cheaper (and less labour) to just swap the head for a new one rather than go through the hassle of pressure test, pull it apart, reuse old bits, grind the valves, re-building it etc

Dunno how the costs compare, but if you are getting a garage to do it, you/they will be better covered if a Milner's head proves faulty, and it should be less time in pieces, but get the garage to order the head, not you.
