Hello, newbie here! Just had to have fuel pump rebuilt due to front seal gone. Classic. Those that are rebuilding it say that it would be good to change the throttle shaft - - part no 9461616155 BOSCh / 146514-7120 ZEXEL - but i Can't find anything anywhere? They are holding fire before reassembling everything completely so time is of the essence. a) does anyone know ehre i can find one? and b) how serious is it if it works but isn't great as currently rebuilt it's in that situation.... Advice very gladly received!

Well first off there is no need to rebuild a pump just because the front seal needed replacing. So if they said they needed to do that they have stuffed you.
All they needed to do is remove and replace the seal with a new Zexel branded one, then refit the pump.
Any extra parts they want to fit are just to increase their labour charges.
The worry now is that if they have stripped the pump down then that will cause issues down the line.

Ha! thanks for the response! I hope they haven't done me over. They do come highly recommended from people that fitted an engine for me a few years back and they've worked with for yonks. One of their team knows the pump like the back of his hand having been a shogun tech so fingers crossed! I've since spoken to them and they said it's more about not wanting to reassemble imperfect parts but as it's not available anywhere little i can do, it may develop a leak in time but i gather practically all pumps have a tiny amount of leak?? Can't do anything about it apart from buying a whole new pump which I'm not going to do for @£1-5 part! Fingers crossed it's all good! |

Just to add to this, over 10 years i have changed 1079 2.8 injector pump front seals
I have never ever had to change the drive shaft and have never had any issues of future failure because of this, they will last for another 12 to 15 years happily.
Over the years i have had many heated conversations with pump specialists who pop up on forums and Facebook who swear blind a new seal alone will not work but the reality is this is complete and utter bulsh1t
A new seal will happily overcome any wear from the old seal (which will be slight at most) and work well for the duration
Just to add stock...... Zexel seals are designed for pump diesel but do also work okay with veg oil BUT not bio, they won't last more than 2 years at a push and if its a bad mix it can kill a new seal in 3 months, been there seen it..... you won't get the typical first warning stalling symptoms but instead the first symptoms will be your oil sump filling with fuel _________________

Thanks Mark - interesting to hear. 1079??? Dayerm! I'm impressed! I don't think I've changed my underpants that many times By drive shaft - do you mean throttle lever? Sorry I'm way out of my paygrade here!
And therefore I don't need to panic in the slightest? |

Ah, no i mean the main injector pump drive shaft sorry my mistake, theres so much talk of this needing to be changed as well and i obviously didn't read the title correctly
BUT that said if its not leaking there seems little point stripping the pump to fit a new shaft or shaft seal.... its just not a common leak point _________________

That said he has said it's not essential but just he didn't want to put it together with signs of wear. And that it could last fine. I think he was just saying whilst it's here there is the opportunity to replace it.
I'm pleased to hear about veg oil though - i haven't researched it yet - still on getting things up and running properly but will check out all the posts re that later on. Thanks for the advice! It's a minefield doing all this. Great to find a good team of people on here! Such a wealth of knowledge - you are all like the 10th emergency service! |

Thanks for this. I’ve sent a pic to the garage - it looks a bit different apparently. Is there a part number on it anywhere?! My pump is 104741-3323. How close are we to 3323?! Oh and if it’s a match or near! How much would you be after for getting it to Bristol tmrw?! *looks hopeful* |

Sorry to delay reporting back, but a big THANK YOU to YOZA! It worked and was in better condition than the existing so they fitted it and she flies in to action thanks to the new alternator and with a pump that doesn't leak everywhere and leaves me stranded 2 mins away from the house! HAPPY DAY! |
