I have been losing coolant, so am topping up the header tank

It seems there is a leak in the piping that goes under the car to the rear air con

1. is the coolant the same water ?

2. to replace the piping I am thinking of buying stainless steel braided pipe

a. is this suitable ? if not, what ?

b. what diameter size is best ?

c. how much of it will I need ?

Being pedantic Steve, if it's coolant that is leaking from the pipe, it will be going to the heater matrix in the rear, which is in the same casing and ductwork as the aircon. Just check that the water is coming from the pipework, and not from inside the casing (ie the matrix). I would say that using braided hose is probably overkill - this pipework is not under any great pressure, and normal radiator hose is reinforced with a textile layer sandwiched in the rubber. Yes, this is all part of the main cooling circuit. If you suspect that the rear heater matrix is actually the culprit, you can simply cut or disconnect both inlet and outlet hoses from it, then connect the hose ends together with jubilee clips and a suitable, short piece of copper tube, to give continuity to the circuit, and drain the matrix. Losing the heating in the back at this time of year is less of a worry than losing coolant, but you would want the matrix sorting (if it is responsible) before the cold weather comes - a LWB is a big volume to rely on just the front heater!

Morning Steve.

As Andy mentioned the cooling system for the whole vehicle is a continuous loop. It comprises of metal pipes with flexible rubber sections. The metal sections of pipe are in a joint run, using separate pipes fixed side by side, for the aircon system. Those cannot be separated from each other as doing so will cause a split in one or both.

Again as Andy mentioned you can bypass the rear heater, if the leak is from one of the flexible pipes going into the box with all the gubbins and matrix in. Also those flexible pipes can be readily replaced.

Obviously what you need to do is work out exactly the leak is, before we can suggest a course of action.

This diagram shows the inside of the rear heater unit, assuming that is what is leaking, which is located in front of the offside rear wheel plus another with the pipework layout. The photo shows where the water pipes connect, which is where Andy means you can use a length of small coper pipe to bypass the Matrix.
