|
|
I am about to attempt to change the gaskets etc on my rocker cover.
The torque setting seem very low.
I need to buy a torque wrench but cannot locate one that goes down to the setting required to do the job.
Any help appreciated.

I assume you are using a 1/2" drive wrench.
You may need a 3/8 torque wrench to get the lower numbers.

The cam cover gasket doesn't have to resist much pressure, so the nuts don't need a lot of torque. You may need to go back and re-tighten them after the gasket has bedded in. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Torque wrenches for such low values are invairiably 1/4" and expensive. The cheapest I've seen are around £50. Worse still you may only use them a couple of times. If your building computers and assembling electrical parts you may use them more.
I found that at the 0.4psi required for the seals. Applying some Wynns gasket maker at the back of them, fastening them in firmly finger tight, followed by a 1/4 - 1/2 turn, with a socket, is sufficient. If your deforming the rubber, it's way too tight.
NB: finger tight is subjective, to whatevever occupation you have. Screwing the front and rear halves of a mains plug together uses far more than 0.4psi. _________________

I use a motorcycle torque wrench for low pressures, but as Lewis says finger tight plus a small turn is sufficient at that low pressure.
Just as you would for spark plugs in a petrol engine. _________________ Ian.

Assuming you have a 2.8 the torque setting is 4nm which on an engine thats 20 years old, has probably over heated a few dozen times at least and been though several million heat cycles is completely inappropriate.
Just tighten it up sensibly and if using new securing bolt bungs pulling the washers nicely onto the bung without destroying them will be just fine, plus DO use some silicon sealer around the half moons BUT don't use it on the main seal...... _________________

Is there a walk through for changing the gaskets.
The only one I can find leads to a dead page.
I do not want to make a mistake and fry my engine. _________________ Delica - La Guardia Silver '95 SWB High Roof Exceed 2 - ZOMBIE HUNTER |

Actually it is quite simple.
Remove intercooler, unsuring you do not snap the small plastic pipe connector between the radiator and the expansion bottle.
Undo the bolt holding the ATF dipstick tube to the top of the cover and move it to the passenger side of the engine bay.
Disconnect the rocker cover breather pipe.
Undo the two bolts holding the rocker cover in place.
Remove the old gasket, which is a fitted into a recess in the underside of the cover.
Remove the two Halfmoon seals, fitted to the front and rear of the cylinderhead. Take note of which goes where, as they have different thicknesses.
Use a rag to clean off all the upper surface and the inside of the rocker cover.
Wash out the inside of the breather baffles in the rocker cover, where the breather pipe connects, a good soak in degreaser and use of a steam cleaner will help greatly.
Refit the new gasket into the rocker cover.
Fit the halfmoon seals into the cylinder head. Apply a small strip of Wynn's gasket maker to the top of the Halfmoon seals, do not get any on the gasket to metal surfaces, and carefully mate the rocker cover to the cyclinder head.
Fasten the cover bolt and rubber seals in place, again with a smear of Wynn's under them.
Refit the ATF pipe, breather pipe and intercooler.
