I am in the middle of 'doing up' my Deli and am wanting to get the side steps and bullbar re chromed. But the company that are going to do it have asked me what the base material it is (either Stainless Steel or Mild Steel).

Just some old steel the makers got hold of. That's how it seems to be
WARNING. Do check that the side steps are NOT TOO RUSTY INSIDE - If they are, you'll be wasting money
Paint is a lot cheaper

I covered mine in black plumbing pipe, just slice it down its length then slide/clip it into place.
No rust, no paint, and when they scratch you can't tell as they are black throughout and nice and thick too.
Use flexy pipe same colour and gauge for the bendy bits.
Black cable ties finish the job dicreatly, but securely. _________________ Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.... |

Mine is now reinforced with Dexion, having power wire brushed the rust off it, and fill-welded visible holes, then given a coat of satin black Hammerite. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Andy, one thing I have noted, on L400 steps, is that the holes get blocked with rust - which encourages rust to multiply, faster than Fly eggs on dead animal/s
They do need holes at the bottom, to "Breathe"

Once welded they will grow their own breathing holes. Though they will be larger in size and quantity.. _________________

Didn't fill all the holes underneath - not visible without lying down! _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

I sand-blasted mine then immersed in rust treatment followed up with respray (I used a Matt paint, but equally can be chromed). Good luck!
Twas wonderful to see the difference! |
