My prop was making a clicking noise, like someone tapping a spanner on a pipe, going from forward to reverse it would clunk as the bearing mashed into the race. Shocked

The longer I left it the worse it went, eventually it was making the tapping noise and a vibrating rumble on deceleration, so thanks to Polgster I swapped the whole unit and everything was fine.

I then had a spare prop with a set of rear mashed bearings so rather than throw it away, I decided to repair it with a new UJ - so if yours goes you can see how to repair it.

Take the prop off the truck by undoing the x4 bolts on the diff end, these are odd bolts with a 12mm head and a 14mm nut, once they are of the prop will slide a centimeter or two backwards then slip off its retaining collar. Then simply slide it out of the transmission end, you will see a shaft appear once this is clear of the housing the prop is out, there will be some oil leakage.

I used a vice to squeeze the bearing caps it the positions I required.

First you need to take the retaining clip off the rear of each bearing, these are hard to see as they are on the inside of the knuckle, they are not circlips either so you Can't use conventional pliers, you need to clean then find each tail of the clip then press it squarely with a pair of pliers, then grab it from the other side with a pair of grips and pull it clear.

You need to obtain a socket that is slightly bigger than the outer diameter of the bearing, and a large nut to help push from the other side, basically your are pushing one bearing out and into the large socket.

Once one side is out, you do exactly the same with its opposite number, although you will need to use another socket in place of the nut.

You should now have two bearings out, separate the knuckle from the prop, then take out the two remaining bearings in the same way.

Until you end up with this. :D

My bearings and inner race were mulshed, as you can see. Shocked

Now carefully clean all areas ready to reassemble with a new Universal Joint bearing, assembly is the opposite to disassembly, make sure the bearings are packed tight with grease, and make sure they sit square before you apply pressure to press them into place.

Refit to truck making sure the transmission end is clean around the oil seal and that the shaft is covered with gear oil so it doesn't pinch the lip of the seal as you slide it home.

Enjoy...…….

I've only done it once, on the Delica. I remembered watching my brother do it on his TR4 back in the day. Did the Lotus have rubber donuts on the drive shafts, Deker? They don't last for ever, either. Especially if it's driven like it's meant to be!

Just a quick note to say the rear bearing [diff end] is much bigger than the front bearing [gearbox end].

The larger rear bearing ready to go in.

Much easier to assemble new bearing than it was to get the old one out.

Yoza, Do you think it is worth changing both front and back at the same time or just the one making the noise at the time?

If you buy a newspaper, do you just look at the pictures, or do you read the text as well?  Very Happy

When you pick up a new book do you skip straight to the last chapter, then guess the content of the lest of the book?  Laughing

Reading the text from the beginning is so enlightening.  Idea

And Lewis is right - my last post was to showpiece my refurbed prop shaft as in my opinion it should be an exhibit for a Turner Art Award.  Rolling Eyes

Andy, please don't take this post to heart, just keyboard banter - lovin your work. X

Yes I did read the text. I was too brief. Should have asked "Is one of the yokes damaged as well?" Paint could have been applied after you last fixed it. I was only looking at the damage you mentioned. So there!! Now I'm going to go and have a really offended huff!! (Stamps foot, pet lip, slams door . . .)

Hang on! Yoza, are you trying to tell me (very cryptically, if I may say so!), that you have only fixed the UJs ONCE since January, only painted the prop shaft since May, and never had it back on the Deli!?" Confused  Shocked

Erm, No.

Where did you get May from?

I did the job in January and posted my write up, then I posted an extra picture to the post yesterday because I thought it looked pretty 😍

Sorry, July, and 2019! No wonder I'm confused. You're confusing me. And I'm confusing me!
