It might be that this is the end of the road for my poor little truck.

For the second time in 4 years I am looking at the prospect of having to change the steering rack, and I'm not sure how viable it is :-(.

Two things have failed at the same time for the van.
1- my steering bottom knuckle now slips round the steering rack splines, not going to get a chance to see if it needs the rack for the next week as it was trailered to my home not work. But I am looking at the prospect of needing a steering rack and steering shaft bottom link.

2- the rear door release catch has fallen apart inside the door. This would not normally be a problem as you can get the door card off and get to the mechanism. however, I only have about 3 inch of space to access it.

So questions.

1 - Is there a recommendation for a company that refurb the steering racks.
2 - Does somewhere sell the steering shaft knuckles or do I need the whole shaft
3 - can I get the door card off without removing the inside handle?

Thanks in advance for the help.

By Rear door, do you mean the sliding door  Question

The Rear door (Tailgate) does not have an inside handle (Unless some person has fitted one)

The sliding door. Yes the handle and the cover for the lock have to be off, that's the easy bit.

Not so easy = The Plastic window trim, many of the lugs will break off  Sad
The long narrow part has to be lifted up.

Need more info please ask.

Rear tail gate, rather than the slide door.

There is a material handle on the tailgate, which has a screw through the door card which holds it in place. I have vague recollections that this was the first thing that I took off when I did the job last time.

If you pry off the rear tailgate door panel you will see a steel rod going up the centre. lift this up and the lock should release.

There is a Mod post on Rustys website showing how to fix a longer rod to this, which exits through the top of the frame, above the plastic panel, which you can screw a standard lift/depress door opening catch onto.  Wink

As for the steering rack; have you tried this company in Glasgow:-
