Hi again ... winter is here so I can spare some time for my rusty car .
The next weeks it is planned a step by step body restoration  ..welding - painting .. whatever is needed to refresh my pal ...
a good friend that is working in a paint shop will help me ..so every weekend we will make a few steps .
firstly I would like to repair my rusty sunroof whitch is leaking rain water in my head  ...
unfortunately I can't find any infos about the particular sunroof  and the upcoming task seems difficult.( I want to be prepeared for any scenario)
My sunroof is THERMA LITE TOUGHENED as you can see in the following  pic

an it is supposed to look like this

but it is hiden under many layers of silicon around and over sealant rubber...  Shocked

the sealant is rotten for sure and probably the roof is rusty .
It would be great if I could repair it but in case that this is undoable or quite expensive probably I will take the welding option to seal permanetly the hole in the roof.

Does any one ever seen a sunroof like mine ?
does it have drain tubes ?
can I found spare rubber sealant ?
any idea how can I seal the leak ? I'm not gona use again silicon ..I'm looking a solution that will last .

Any info it is more than welcome

Hi Nik, mine is a high roof, with sun roof. The drains go down the b pillars and come out through the bottom of them where they meet the sill, behind the front wheelarches. You should find a short piece of rubber tube sticking out.

I get the impression that the sunroof is not a factory original and most likely fitted by a previous owner.

You would only be able to tell by removing the internal roof lining.

That would suggest it's a retro-fit.

I don't understand the term  retro-fit but according to retro-fit  means to rebuild it somehow right ??
The problem is that I don't know how .... it's winter and raining inside the car !!!
The best option they gave me so far is to glue it permanetly , with windshield glue I think , so it won't open again .
Any alternatives ?

Retro fit is the same as 'aftermarket' i.e. fitting things to the vehicle that it did not come with, but were available to be fitted as optional items when it was first bought.

Personally I would strip all the old sealant off and give it a good clean, then refit it with new seals.

My Rover 75s sunroof drains have a design fault - a joint in the drain tubes which separates, leaking water into the footwells. The felt seal around the closed sunroof is permeable, so these drain tubes are working every time it rains. My quick fix until I have time to do the job properly was to spray chainwax into the felt seal, and let it dry, then repeat, wiping the excess off the paintwork. So far, it seems to be working, and my carpets are now dry. I've even opened the roof on fine days, and it re-seals!

You could just cut it out and stick a great big slab of metal in place of it, like I did...  :D

Mine roof was significantly more rusty than yours, though...!

I'm interested in how you get on with this.  I'm planning on going over my van to keep any rust that may be creeping in in check.  I barely have a clue where to start.

same here... seems that i have to start from the top (sunroof)
cause i have to stop any water fall to my head and chairs and carpets...and...everywhere..
The day after tomorrow i'll have a good estimation of my next steps on this...
let's hope that I will not be disappointed so much of my findings after internal lining removal ...

Here we are ... at the beginning of a "wonderful" journey .

It was not so rusty as I was assumed it was ...
but the sealing rubber is in very bad condition .. and for sure the sunroof can't be operational without new sealing rubber ... so ..

Time for decisions ...

a) to weld a patch  and seal the sun roof for good ?
OR
b) to use a sealing rubber glue or something similar in order to fix the problem temporarily ?

Measure the width of the foam strip that is already there, between the roof and the window frame.

Then take a look at using some single sided adhesive foam rolls, like these:- rubber seal

You can also use some Wynn's liquid rubber gasket maker to help seal the innerside, above the roof, and the outside edge of the exposed rubber.

If you haven't heard of Wynn's then look here:- Wynn's gasket maker

I use Wynn's for just about everything, from sealing the rocker cover to the cylinder head to weatherproofing anywhere that water can get in. It becomes form in less than an hour and cures overnight.

The problem is at those points Lewis .. where there can't be drained

there is no way to make the two surfaces ( rubber and roof) totally flat to each other ... so I think that any sealing rubber it won't solve the problem permanetly .
Of course this solution is much cheaper than welding  ....
Here in Greece , Sikaflex is used widely for this kind of repairs ..

Use thicker infill strips between the ridges, with a thinner layer above.

Alternatively flatten the ridges where they go under the frame of the sunroof. Sikaflex will then be able to be applied as a continuous layer, both above and below the roof panel.
