Seems like the ideal place to ask about those cheap Chinese eberspacher ripoffs - has anyone fitted one of those? I've heard mostly good stuff about them.

I'd ideally like a 2kw one I can hide somewhere, and I'm happy to do the electrics: My only reservation is making holes in the bodywork. Is there an 'idiots guide' to suitable mounting places for these? Do the burner vents poke out the bottom or the side?

I've heard you can mount them externally (though that doesn't seem safe) and run them off anything from kerosene to veg oil.

Anyone with experience - would love to hear your tips!

Many thanks!

PS: Having a remote control switch also seems like a good idea for those frosty mornings...

Yes, I've been thinking of treating myself to one of these. Thinking I would mount it with its tank etc as a cassette behind the engine hump, next to the sliding door, so I can connect it to either a leisure battery, or the twin winter pack under the seat. I would simply put the exhaust hose out of a slightly lowered front window, assuming the exchanger is efficient enough to make the exhaust gases too cool to melt the wind deflector. The exhaust stub and burner air intake are side by side, pointing downwards underneath it, so it would need to be raised enough to bend the exhaust hose upwards, so would probably need a condensate trap fitted too. Cassette-type installation, means it can be removed, and used elsewhere, eg in shed, garage tent. I calculated that a small 80a/h battery would keep it running constantly for around 20 hours.

I've just bought one, there's a wiring harness with it, so just need power to it, you can buy the remotes separate for the led screen ones
I've read it can be mounted internal or external

Hi Andyman... not sure I like the idea of a 'temporary' exhaust out of the window!

I'd be interested to see how anyone else had fitted the pipes permanently.. is it good practice to use side vents or pipe it out of the bottom of the chassis, and do you need to worry about wading if you've got one fitted externally?

So many questions - thanks all!

Well next to the exhaust pipe is an inlet pipe so if you wade then it would need to be fitted so no water gets in.. Also there's a fan so not sure I'd risk wading if fitted outside dontknow

Doctor When, I don't want to go drilling holes in the van for a permanent exhaust, and as I would make the system a portable unit, I don't mind the temporary nature of installation, I may modify the end of the exhaust tube to ensure it stays in place, and can't fall back through the window, and doesn't harm the wind deflector, and put the burner etc. on the cab passenger floor, where it doesn't take up rear space, and is easy to connect to batteries under the seat.

Andy: If it is only a narrow, flexible, exhaust pipe with no significant heat in it the you could use one of those U shaped pipe holders that you hang a washing machine drain pipe over a sink with.

Sorry but I'm not a wimp, even at 68, I'll just use a good sleeping bag.
It worked well at Usha Gap campsite last year when we had minus temps, and I didn't have my over quilt as I had lent it to Andyman cos he had forgotten his sleeping bag!!! :D

However, I agree with you, when in my 70's, in my Deli on a few cold nights, didn't need a heater.
Always leave a window open.

Always leave a window open or suffer condensation
I have wind deflectors on my front windows so open both front door windows approx 2" so have ventilation without chance of rain coming in if it rains during the night.
Also have a solar powered mozzie killer which charges during the day and keeps the little blighters away during the night.

Just think, Ian, if I buy one of these, I shouldn't have to tap you for a loan of your quilt. In fact, I'll be able to sleep in the buff, in the dead of winter!
