Thanks...
I think(?) that was around the price of the one mentioned in the old thread...
Anyway, it's a small price to pay, compared to fixing a damaged engine...

Cheers

I got one of those.

My first one came from a guy on here called mark, he emigrated to China or similar, then came back recently.

The one he sold me split down the seem, but it lasted 12 years, happy with that.

Hi All,

I've just noticed my (probably original) header tank is starting with a little hole at the top as I could see water bubbling out once the engine got warm, so want to order a new one.
The Ebay links above seem to work still, so thanks for those.

Does the system need to be completely drained / refilled to fit one of these? (not sure I'll be capable of that!)

Cheers

I bought even cheaper - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32897875294.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dzFFpaC
Haven't fitted it yet as existing tank only seeping for now but can't see why you would drain the system, just change it and top up with antifreeze...

No Need to drain it.

Once you undo the two pipes underneath, it will drain itself to the level of the pipes  Wink

Thanks for that.
I really have no experience at all with engine stuff hence the stupid questions.
I did wonder if I could somehow catch the liquid that comes out of just the expansion tank and put it back in the new one after its fitted.
I'll get one ordered then I guess I'll try and catch any liquid that comes out of the old one to put it back in the new one...

If you take a look under the offside end of the radiator, next to where the ATF pipe connects, you will find a drain tap.

Use that to drain the coolant into a container for re-use.  Smile

Hmm, okay, sounds a bit much for me just yet!
I think I'll just try and catch what I can coming out of the expansion tank itself TBH...

This will help find the drain tap, between the ATF in and the lower radiator coolant pipe:-

Hi All,

Well, a new expansion tank arrived yesterday and I plan to have a go at fitting it over the weekend.
I don't plan on draining the full system but will siphon out what is just in the expansion tank first leaving the rest just in the hoses.

Will I need to prime the system somehow when I have the new tank in and I'm refilling it.
Is there a risk of getting air pockets in the system?

Cheers

When the intercooler is off and the battery removed your left with the two hoses underneath and 3x fixings,  2x 12mm headed bolts and one nut, undo the fixings then lay the tank down makes it easier to get to the hoses  Very Happy

You'll lose around 2L of coolant so have a litre of the correct antifreeze (or at least the same as what you have in there) available to top up with along with water of course and its job done  Very Happy

Thanks Mark,

It is actually the V6 3L petrol I have so no intercooler.

I realised I'll need to take the battery out to make it easier etc, I was just worried about getting air pockets in the system and wondered was there any procedure I needed to follow when filling it back up to prevent this?

On the 2.8TD there is a coolant system air bleed screw just below the top of the bulkhead. above the battery.

I'm not sure if the V6 has the samer setup, but most items between the two models are identical.

This is what it looks like, a plastic bolt head, which just needs to be undone a bit to let air bubbles escape.

Ahh okay thanks Lewis, yes I think I do have that screw.
So do I loosen that off a little while I'm filling it back up and with the engine running?

Yes, until it stops bubbling.
