Can anyone tell me if the chrome bit comes off?  Is it just a cover? Or is it the whole mirror that needs to come of .

Yes!  It's just a chrome finished plastic cover, usually held in place with some double sided sticky foam tape.

Got them off  :D they were just stuck on. the mirrors are not electric that's why I never took them of
