Good Morning All,

I have been shoulders deep in the engine bay this morning trying to discover the cause of a horrible noise on my L300 which I thought was the low tension on the alternator. There are two  sets of pulleys on the crank. The outer one is solid and in place but the inner one with the double belt to the alternator is loose and can be slid up and down the shaft but doesn't rotate. Is there a locking ring that has gone missing, or is this a fully floating wheel held in place by tension?

I am at a loss as all of the manuals seem to miss the breakdown of this part!

Regards,
Kenny

The pulley is supposed to be a 1-piece item which fits on the tapered end of the crankshaft with a woodruff key to prevent rotation. I am not sure if it is a 2-part construction bonded together with a rubber damper ring, and if my addled memory serves me well, there may be a separate thrower ring between the pulley and the timing belt sprocket. I suggest you undo the crankshaft bolt and get the pulley off, as in this state, it is only likely to damage the end of your crankshaft. There are plenty of pictures of these on google, and are readily available, so it might be a wise investment.

Andy,

Thanks for the reply

On closer inspection, it turns out that is it a 2-part construction and that the rubber damping ring has failed and subsequently been worn off. Going to get the Deli to a garage around the corner and have the pulley and belts all replaced in one visit. I will get the offending pulley returned so that I can document it for the club.

I'm just glad it is only the pulley as it came to light when the gearbox stopped working due to the gearbox pump not pumping!
