Hiya there, I've recently purchased a pretty poorly L300 which has been stood in a field.  There's a bit of corrosion and the steering rack is rotten as are the power steering pipes and ends which are stripped. I've got a decent  replacement steering rack but need the high pressure pipe and unions to bolt it to the steering rac and pump.... Can anyone help as I'm stranded without it.... Also the turbo needs reconditioning Sad

Thank you.

Hi, Mark. When my ps cooling rad split a couple of years back, I put in a temporary cooling coil of 10mm copper central heating pipe, which withstood the pressure for a couple of weeks until I got a replacement rad. Recently I had to repair a leak on one of the pipes where it is clipped to the chassis, which I managed with a 8mm compression fitting, - so far so good.It will be hard to find a complete good set on a scrapper, you may be able to get pattern pieces made up in the correct steel pipe, complete with unions. Central heating copper may be strong enough for most loads, but the pressure when you hit the limits of lock spikes above its max rated pressure, so not advisable long term. The steel pipes are a mixture of 8 and 10mm o/d, so compatible with compression fittings. I sealed mine with Blue Hylomar gasket sealant. HTH.

Thanks for that... I'm wondering if I should have got a L400 now...lol.
There's a hydraulic place near me that makes pattern pipes but they need the ends/ unions to do the work.... Would you know if there's anything I could salvage of a similar age L200 or pajero and give my  pipes as the pattern?

Thanks again Smile

It is very likely that the ends/unions from those would be the same, but I couldn't say for sure. Would a fabricator not have a full range of parts?

I'll just take my steering rack, pipes and what's left of the unions and see what they can do.

Hopefully it'll be okay as I'm stressing over the costs now. Thanks for the help. Smile

It will be a lot easier to sort out and weld than a rusty L400!

I've got to strip the underside,  weld up certain bits and rustproof it...and fit a snorkel Smile
You wouldn't happen to know of a decent Delica specialist would you as there's an awful lot to go wrong Sad

Just keep asking the questions as you come across the problems, - somone will have an answer. If you want a specialist to do mechanical work, our northern legend, v8 Rick, sadly passed away last year. However, there are some recommends in the lower sections of the forum, and Mark 3 from Essex is definitely worth contacting to find out when he can fit in a multi-venue Northern tour. He has breathed life into many a reluctant Deli!

To second what Andy said, thefe will be an answer as these are very basic vehicles, what makes them unique is the configuration, not the technology. The 4x4 system is functionally the same as a series landrover! Worth search the Delica canada forums as well, they are quite good and technical with these, as they are still very popular due to canadian import rules.

Also check out the Australian site as there is a large number of Delis down under.

Heya there, sorry for the late reply.  I've not done anything at moment as I've just not had the time but I've found a place in Castleford that should be able to do the job for about 40 quid.. I just need to collect the old pipe and what's remaining of the pipe ends and go down with my new steering lock. Mine is an extremely rotten example so it's not a happy situation.  Hopefully you'll have an easier time Smile  I'll find the details of the company and post them on here tonight if you want to call them? Good luck to you Smile

Hi Mark, if the people in Castleford make a good job of your pipes, post up their details on here, and tell them to expect some business, - it seems like steering pipes are becoming a more common issue!

Thanks for the pointer Lewis - my local Mitsubishi dealer can get the pipe I need for £40.

He sent me the same diagram that Lewis posted.
Unfortunately, I have tried to unscrew the pipe fitting from the steering rack  - using crows foot type pipe spanner  - and ended up rounding off the hex.

So I am trying an in situ repair, with some structural adhesive, ti tube and carbon wrap.. I don't think it will hold!

When that fails I am into radiator out? -  cutting the pipe to get a full socket hammered on the fitting to remove it then replace the pipe.
However am a bit nervous about dis-assembling my rust bucket as I reckon I could cause more damage.
Belts also need doing so if it has to happen then it could be the time to deal with a lot of other issues!
2017 has been a bad year for the my Deli..

Cheers,

Nigel
