Hi all,

As stated, this morning I was on full lock and suddenly the steering kind of groaned and then got Very stiff. I managed to drive home but it was really difficult at low speed.

Checked the fluid level which looks okay, so wondered what my next nightmare could be? Any advice appreciated.

If memory serves me right jwdg298 has a 2.8TD L400, which do not use pump belts, the pump is mechanical.

There may be some contamination or air in the system, which has built up. The 'groan' makes me tend towards thinking of an air bubble. I would be inclined to flush the system through with fresh Dexron II.

There is always a chance that something has built up and got stuck in the cooling pipe that runs along the front of the Deli, behind the front panel.

Hi Andy and Lewis,

Thanks for the advice. You are correct Lewis, she's an L400, I thought I had that in my signature but obviously not. I'll try and sort that for next time  Wink .

Is there any advice on here about flushing the power steering fluid? I've had a quick look but no joy.

It's horrible, watery and black so probably worth doing anyway.

She did it again this afternoon but after a good bit of right boot the problem cleared and hasn't returned (yet).

Thanks again

The Tech faqs section has the workshop manuals.

This is the steering one:-

See section 10.

Simplest way, drain the fluid, re-fill, if it's still dirty, then drain and re-fill.
That's what I would do.
