I can recommend http://www.wowo.co.uk/ in East Sussex.
Really laid back and chilled. Fire pits provided and plank benches around them which is good for groups. Musicians in the top field teepee on a Saturday, quiet in the lower fields. All usual facilities (all a bit rustic, composting loos etc, but endless hot water in the showers) and its a short walk to the bluebell steam railway and 15 min walk to Shieffield Park national trust place (with a woodland kids play trail). Camp shop sells most of what you need, including beer, logs for the fire and they hire local maps and lend wheelbarrows for your haul. There is a barn with some sofas and kids games, a TV and a piano. Fridges/Freezers for ice blocks. It isn't a luxury bland campsite with a club house if that's your thing, its a bit ramshackle and very relaxed (which is my thing).
You do need to book and it is possibly a bit pricey (but no more than the new forest sites) and you can reserve fire pit areas.
