I need to buy a new head gasket. The one removed frpm.the engine has two notches on its end, the head has not been skimmed etc.
Moat places list a four notch but nowhere seems to list a two notch. Is it a mitsi only part and if so any idea of part numbers as my local dealer aren't great with import vehicle parts. _________________ Swb L400 blue and grey, 235/75 r15 at's, remote central locking, tow bar |

I robbed this info off a post by Soulman when I changed mine I was told to get the next thickness up or the four notch as I bought a new head.
Bazza
There are four different size head gaskets, part numbers ME200751 thru ME200754 sized as A, B, C and D doesn't say how thick or which one is thickest unfortunately. _________________

I used a three notch gasket as a three notch came off it, you MUST use a genuine mitsubishi part or like Carstairs you will being doing the job again next week.
Enjoy tightening those head bolts, squeaky bottom time.... :D _________________ Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.... |

When I replaced mine I got the three notch headgasket from Mitsubishi. If I recall it was £60-80 but for a job like that I think its best to make sure it done properly. _________________

Onw I orseee has rocked up and it's a four notch... I took a two notch out of engine. Mitsi trying to tell me that. four notch is recommended replacement if engine measurements not taken. Is that right or rubbish?? _________________ Swb L400 blue and grey, 235/75 r15 at's, remote central locking, tow bar |

Part numbers:
Gaskets thickness's are to match the set of pistons fitted.

Will it cause issue fitting a four notch when a two2 notch came off it? Assumed it okay and started rebuild.. _________________ Swb L400 blue and grey, 235/75 r15 at's, remote central locking, tow bar |

Ideally you measure piston heights/protrusions then use the appropriate gasket, but you'd be fine using a 4 notch on any engine |

A bigger notch number - eg four will not do any harm. When I did mine I had a three notch previously fitted but could not get hold of it in the timespace I had and had advice from a very good source on here that a two notch would be fine( that is thinner), I would be interested in what the difference is - especially if its mpg!!!
Don't quote me on that though ! You should be able to get the one you need if you do a bit of calling around.. _________________ A Little Knowledge is Dangerous and expensive! especially if your me Mending anything!! |

Are the figures 0.5 and 1.0 in the final column of rows four and five of Lewis's table piston protrusion in mm? Seems quite a large variation to me, but would explain why you are safest to fit the four notch (thickest) gasket. Too thin, and your pistons could start clouting the head or valves! Too thick, you might lose a little compression and performance, but I know which I would rather risk, assuming I couldn't get the exact correct gasket! _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Andy.
I think that's piston size on dia.?
When I did mine I ordered all four gaskets on the arrangement I could send the three I didn't need back. I only got three of the sizes but measured them with a mic and the Size difference was tiny If I remember? Only a few thou on the metal section. That's why I'm interested in how much difference it has on performance and running, that's forgetting clouting anything. _________________ A Little Knowledge is Dangerous and expensive! especially if your me Mending anything!! |

Andy the 0.5 and 1.0 mm sizes are the piston diameter following reboring and not protrusion, as far as head gasket thickness goes the two or three notch are by far the most common types very rarely have I found a one or four notch gasket fitted.
The differences between the different sizes is minimal and I doubt very much you would notice and alteration in performance tbh .

To conclude thread.
Engine rebuilt, apart from some broken bolts and a silly leak on the water pump(seal moved)
Shes back together started up well and idles nicely.
Have to retighten injector number one as it's not sealing properly. _________________ Swb L400 blue and grey, 235/75 r15 at's, remote central locking, tow bar |

Spoke too soon. Engine under load and glow plug extricated itself with the heli coil. Luckily didn't fire out but still scared the crap out of me.
Now have really large hole in head which upon inspection is also not at the correct angle.
New head it is then... Doh _________________ Swb L400 blue and grey, 235/75 r15 at's, remote central locking, tow bar |
